This Part 1 of IEC 60598 specifies general requirements for luminaires, incorporating electric
light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1 000 V. The requirements and related
tests of this document cover: classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical
construction and photobiological safety.
Each section of this Part 1 is read in conjunction with this Section 0 and with other relevant
sections to which reference is made.
Each part of IEC 60598-2 details requirements for a particular type of luminaire or group of
luminaires on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V. These parts are published separately
for ease of revision and additional sections will be added as and when a need for them is
recognized.
The presentation of photometric data for luminaires is under consideration by the International
Commission on Illumination (CIE) and is not, therefore, included in this Part 1.
Requirements are included in this Part 1 for luminaires incorporating ignitors with nominal
peak values of the voltage pulse not exceeding those of Table 11.2. The requirements apply
to luminaires with ignitors built into ballasts and to luminaires with ignitors separate from
ballasts. For luminaires with ignitors built into lamps, the requirements are under
consideration.
Requirements for semi-luminaires are included in this Part 1.
In general, this Part 1 covers safety requirements for luminaires. The object of this Part 1 is to
provide a set of requirements and tests which are considered to be generally applicable to
most types of luminaires and which can be called up as required by the detail specifications of
IEC 60598-2. This Part 1 is thus not regarded as a specification in itself for any type of
luminaire, and its provisions apply only to particular types of luminaires to the extent
determined by the appropriate part of IEC 60598-2.
The parts of IEC 60598-2, in making reference to any of the sections of Part 1, specify the
extent to which that section is applicable and the order in which the tests are performed; they
also include additional requirements as necessary.
The order in which the sections of Part 1 are numbered has no particular significance as the
order in which their provisions apply is determined for each type of luminaire or group of
luminaires by the appropriate part of IEC 60598-2. All parts of IEC 60598-2 are self-contained
and therefore do not contain references to other parts of IEC 60598-2.
Where the requirements of any of the sections of Part 1 are referred to in the parts of
IEC 60598-2 by the phrase "The requirements of section... of IEC 60598-1 apply", this phrase
is interpreted as meaning that all the requirements of that section of Part 1 apply except those
which are clearly inapplicable to the particular type of luminaire covered by that part of
IEC 60598-2.
For explosion proof luminaires, as covered by IEC 60079, the requirements of IEC 60598
(selecting the appropriate parts 2) are applied in addition to the requirements of IEC 60079. In
the event of any conflict between IEC 60598 and IEC 60079, the requirements of IEC 60079
take priority.
Improvements in safety to take into account the state of the art technology are incorporated in
the standards with revisions and amendments on an ongoing basis. Regional standardization
bodies can include statements in their derived standards to cover products which have
complied with the previous document as shown by the manufacturer or standardization body.
The statements may require that for such products, the previous standard may continue to
apply to production until a defined date after which the new standard shall apply.

This part of IEC 60034 applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by
enclosures for rotating electrical machines. It defines the requirements for protective enclosures
that are in all other respects suitable for their intended use and which, from the point of view of
materials and workmanship, ensure that the properties dealt with in this document are
maintained under normal conditions of use.
This document does not specify degrees of protection against mechanical damage of the
machine, or conditions such as moisture (produced for example by condensation), corrosive
dust and vapour, fungus or vermin.
This document is also applicable to explosion proof machines, but it does not specifiy the types
of protection for use in a potentially explosive (dust, gas) environment. Those are defined in the
IEC 60079 series of standards.
In certain applications (such as agricultural or domestic appliances), more extensive
precautions against accidental or deliberate contact may be specified.
This document gives definitions for standard degrees of protection provided by enclosures
applicable to rotating electrical machines as regards the:
a) protection of persons against contacts with or approach to live parts and against contact
with moving parts (other than smooth rotating shafts and the like) inside the enclosure and
protection of the machine against ingress of solid foreign objects;
b) protection of machines against the harmful effects due to ingress of water;
c) protection of machines against the harmful effects due to ingress of dust.
It gives designations for these protective degrees and tests to be performed to check that the
machines meet the requirements of this document.

rated voltage up to AC 1 000 V or DC 1 500 V connected to low-voltage supply systems.
This document applies to frequencies up to 30 kHz.
NOTE 1 Requirements for insulation coordination for equipment within low-voltage supply systems with rated
frequencies above 30 kHz are given in IEC 60664-4.
NOTE 2 Higher voltages can exist in internal circuits of the equipment.
It applies to equipment for use up to 2 000 m above sea level and provides guidance for use
at higher altitudes (See 5.2.3.4).
It provides requirements for technical committees to determine clearances, creepage
distances and criteria for solid insulation. It includes methods of electrical testing with
respect to insulation coordination.
The minimum clearances specified in this document do not apply where ionized gases are
present. Special requirements for such situations can be specified at the discretion of the
relevant technical committee.
This document does not deal with distances:
– through liquid insulation;
– through gases other than air;
– through compressed air.
This basic safety publication focusing on safety essential requirements is primarily intended
for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the
principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.
One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of
basic safety publications in the preparation of its publications.
However, in case of missing specified values for clearances, creepage distances and
requirements for solid insulation in the relevant product standards, or even missing
standards, this document applies.

EN-IEC 61010-2-010 specifies particular safety requirements for the following types a) to c) of electrical equipment and their accessories, wherever they are intended to be used, whenever the heating of materials is one of the functions of the equipment. Addition: Add the following text after item c): It is possible that all or part of the equipment falls within the scope of one or more other Part 2 standards of IEC 61010 as well as within the scope of this standard. In that case, the requirements of those other Part 2 standards will also apply. In particular, if equipment is intended to be used for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) purposes, the requirements of IEC 610102101 will also apply. However, when the equipment incorporates a refrigerating system and a heating function where the combination of the two introduces additional or more severe HAZARDS than if treated separately, then it is possible that IEC 61010-2-012 is applicable instead of this Part 2-010. See further information in the flow chart (Figure 102) for the selection process and the guidance in the Introduction.
