1.1 Product definition
This document contains the dimensional, optical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements of a fully installed optical fibre wall or pole mounted box for up to 288 fibre splices, in order for it to be categorized as a European standard product.
The typical configuration is splicing of incoming fibres to optional splitters, connecting on the other side to outgoing fibres.
A box is a protective housing containing a fibre management system with splice trays of various fibre separation levels. The box can contain one or more of the following:
- storage and routing for fibre and cable;
- uncut fibre cable storage;
- splice trays;
- passive optical devices (optical splitters or WDM).
A box can be installed on a vertical indoor or outdoor surface above ground level. If the box is required to be relocatable with cables attached, the following additional tests are expected to be performed:
- cable bending;
- cable torsion.
This document specifies the number of splice trays and splice capacity for each fibre separation level. The maximum capacity is 288 splices. For housings with a higher number of splices, EN 50411 4 1 (street cabinets) can be used.

1.2 Operating environment
The tests selected, combined with the severity and duration, are representative of indoor and outside plant for above ground environments defined by EN IEC 61753 1:
- category C: Controlled (indoor) environment;
- category A: Aerial (outdoor above ground) environment.
1.3 Reliability
Whilst the anticipated service life expectancy of the product in this environment is 20 years, compliance with this document does not guarantee the reliability of the product. This is expected to be predicted using a recognized reliability assessment programme.
1.4 Quality assurance
Compliance with this document does not guarantee the manufacturing consistency of the product. This is expected to be maintained using a recognized quality assurance programme.
1.5 Allowed fibre and cable types
This box standard accommodates EN IEC 60793 2 50 single-mode fibres and EN IEC 60793 2 10 A1-OM2 to A1-OM5 and A1-OM1 multimode fibres and all EN 60794 series optical fibre cables with various fibre capacities, types and designs.

IEC 62149-4:2022 defines performance specifications for 1 300 nm fibre optic transceiver modules used for the ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-3 Gigabit Ethernet application. This document contains definitions for product performance requirements as well as a series of tests and measurements, for which clearly defined conditions, severities and pass/fail criteria are provided. The tests are intended to be run on a "once-off" basis to prove any product’s ability to satisfy the performance standard’s requirements. A product that has been shown to meet all the requirements of a performance standard can be declared as complying with the performance standard but will then be controlled by a quality assurance/quality conformance program. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- the normative references are updated;
- the condition "for short periods" in 4.1 is removed;
- the absolute limiting rating for soldering temperature in Table 1 is modified;
- the maximal optical output power (multimode fibre) in Table 4 is increased from −3,5 dBm to −3 dBm, to align value with the referenced document;
- a note is added to Table 7 to clarify that out-of-specification products are not allowed to pass the performance tests.

IEC 61753-084-02:2025 contains the minimum initial performance, test and measurement requirements and severities which a fibre optic pigtailed 980/1 550 nm wide wavelength division multiplexing (WWDM) device will satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the requirements of category C (indoor controlled environment), as defined in IEC 61753-1:2018, Annex A. WWDM is defined in IEC 62074-1. The requirements cover devices with single-mode non‑connectorised pigtails. This device has three ports; 980 nm port, 1 550 nm port and common port for output or combining 980 nm and 1 550 nm. IEC TR 62150-7: 2024 which is a technical report, provides simple calculation guidelines for the laser safety class of optical transceivers and transmitters, whose baseline standard is IEC 60825-1. The calculation methodology for Class 1 and Class 1M safety levels is the main scope of this document, because most of optical transceivers and transmitters are specified for these classifications. The calculations and classifications in this document follow IEC 60825-1, which specifically advises that laser safety classifications be based on tests that consider any reasonably foreseeable single-fault condition in the application of a transceiver or transmitter.
