ABSTRACT
This specification covers the requirements for the compound and physical characteristics of homogeneous (Type I) and layered (Type II) rubber sheet floor covering with backing. Both types shall be fibrous and foamed rubber, and may also contain intermediate layers. They may either have smooth, embossed, or molded pattern surfaces, and shall not contain asbestos. They shall be tested on, and conform accordingly to the following requirements: chemical composition; hardness; modulus of 10 % elongation; static load limit; resistance to chemicals such as white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, sodium hydroxide solution, hydrochloric acid solution, sulfuric acid solution, household ammonia solution, and household bleach; resistance to heat; resistance to light; width and length; and base, wear layer, and overall thicknesses.

1.1 This specification covers the requirements for the compound and physical characteristics of rubber sheet floor covering having a rubber wear layer with backing. Products may also contain intermediate layers.

4.1 There is typically a higher concentration of soluble alkali salts in the surface region of a concrete slab due to the initial bleeding process of a freshly placed concrete slab. If after a resilient floor covering material is installed there is sufficient moisture within the slab to place these salts into solution a potentially damaging high pH solution can develop beneath the installed material.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The ability of a substrate surface to readily absorb water is a key indicator in determining how to correctly install many types of flooring adhesives, primers, self-leveling underlayments, and other products. Several flooring industry publications such as CRI’s Carpet Installation Standard, RFCI’s Recommended Installation Practice for Homogenous Sheet Flooring, Fully-Adhered, as well as most flooring, adhesive, primer, and underlayment manufacturers reference substrate surface porosity criteria in their application instructions since this directly impacts the spread rate of directly applied material, the open time, and other critical installation factors.  
5.2 Installing flooring products over low or non-absorptive (sometimes referred to as “non-porous”) substrates such as densely machine-troweled concrete, mature and well-hydrated concrete, existing resilient flooring, polymer terrazzo and others may require adjustments to the surface preparation method or product selection to ensure a successful installation.  
5.3 Use this practice to obtain a qualitative assessment of substrate water absorption (porosity) and whether or not that substrate should be regarded as porous/absorptive or non-porous/non-absorptive as these terms relate to the installation of resilient floor coverings, adhesives, self-leveling underlayments, primers, and other products. This practice will produce results directly applicable to determining appropriate surface preparation requirements in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, but it is in no way meant to replace published manufacturer’s literature regarding the determination of substrate water absorption (porosity) and the impact such has, if any, on substrate preparation requirements and on the installation of their respective materials.

Standard Practice for Preparing Concrete Floors to Receive Resilient Flooring

ABSTRACT
This practice covers the procedure for determining the acceptability of concrete floors for the installation of resilient flooring. It also includes suggestions for ensuring that the constructed concrete floor is acceptable for such installations but does not cover tests for adequacy of the concrete floor to perform structural requirements. A permanent, effective moisture vapor retarder, of the specified thickness and permeance, is required under all on- or below-grade concrete floors. Concrete floors for resilient floorings should be permanently dry, clean, smooth, structurally sound, and free of substances that may prevent adhesive bonding. Surface cracks, grooves, depression, control joints or other non-moving joints, and other irregularities should be filled or smoothed with latex patching or a recommended underlayment compound. The surface of the floor should be cleaned by scraping, brushing, vacuuming, or any other method. All concrete slabs should be tested for moisture regardless of age or grade level while all concrete floors should be tested for pH before installing resilient flooring.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Ratings are developed by some subjective or comparative evaluation criteria, or both, of a sample(s) to some reference criteria or when compared to a control sample. These parameters generally include change in gloss, color, surface texture, alterations to pattern and possibly restorability of appearance with normal maintenance procedures, including the use of finishes or buffing. Rating is done by a qualified individual or preferably by a panel of qualified observers under specified lighting conditions in accordance with prescribed procedures.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method is intended to provide a numerical rating system for classification of resilient floors during the various stages of their wear life in relation to their condition, as perceived by a knowledgeable user.  
1.2 This test method is intended to allow comparison between two or more samples or groups of samples for differences in visual appearance.  
1.3 This method provides recommended viewing conditions and lighting for rating visual differences between samples or groups of samples.  
1.4 This method can be utilized to evaluate change in visual appearance before and after some specified test condition exposure, for example, in service wear due to foot traffic, or other tests where change in appearance might occur.

3.1 This test method is a meaningful test for determining the indentation recovery properties of uninstalled resilient floor covering.3  
3.2 This test method is intended solely for the purpose of determining compliance, where applicable, with static load requirements set forth in resilient flooring product specifications under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F06 on Resilient Floor Coverings.  
3.3 As testing is conducted on uninstalled flooring, results are not an indicator of the floor covering's installed performance.3
SCOPE
1.1 This test method is intended for use in determining the recovery properties of uninstalled resilient floor covering after long-term indentation test, 24 h under the load specified in the detail specification. The reported value, residual indentation, is the depth of the depression remaining 24 h after removal of the specified load.  
1.2 This test method is intended to evaluate ex-factory floor covering and is not intended to evaluate the performance of installed floor coverings.  
1.3 This test method is not intended for use in evaluating the long-term indentation resistance or recovery properties, or both, of resilient floor coverings at loads above those listed in the Precision and Bias statement as described in Section 10.  
1.3.1 Testing at loads above 250 psi is outside the scope of this test method.  
1.4 Testing with any other indentor plate other than the exact plates listed in Section 4 is outside the scope of this test method.
