Overview
ASTM D6867-19: Standard Specification for Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA)-Fluoropolymer Tubing establishes requirements for tubing produced from virgin PFA fluoropolymer resins. Developed by ASTM International, this standard addresses key properties such as dimensional tolerances, tensile strength, elongation, specific gravity, and dimensional stability. It is widely used in industries that require reliable, chemically resistant, and high-purity fluoropolymer tubing. This standard references ASTM D3307 for resin requirements and does not cover tubing made from recycled material.
Key Topics
Material Requirements
- Only virgin PFA fluoropolymer resins conforming to ASTM D3307 are permitted.
- There is no provision for recycled material, ensuring high purity and performance.
- Abbreviations and terminology are as per ASTM D1600 and D883.
Dimensional Tolerances
- Specifies detailed tolerances for inside diameters and wall thicknesses across a broad range of tubing sizes, ensuring consistent product quality.
Physical Properties
- Specific gravity: Must be between 2.12 and 2.17.
- Tensile strength: Minimum required is 10.0 MPa (1500 psi).
- Elongation: Minimum of 200% at break.
- Tubing must remain free of cracks and splits after dimensional stability tests.
Testing & Conditioning
- Sampling, specimen conditioning, and testing must be performed according to referenced ASTM methods such as D618, D792, D1675, and D4894.
- All tests must be conducted under standardized temperature and laboratory conditions.
Inspection & Certification
- Visual and dimensional inspections are required.
- Certification of virgin material and test compliance must be provided for each lot.
Packaging & Marking
- Products must be packaged in commercial-grade containers suitable for safe transport unless otherwise specified.
Applications
PFA-fluoropolymer tubing produced under ASTM D6867-19 is recognized for its outstanding chemical resistance, high thermal stability, and purity. Typical applications include:
- Semiconductor manufacturing: For ultrapure water and aggressive chemical handling.
- Pharmaceutical and biotech: In critical fluid transfer lines requiring non-leaching and contaminant-free materials.
- Chemical processing: Used in lines where resistance to solvents, acids, and high temperatures is vital.
- Analytical and laboratory equipment: For safe and reliable fluid transport.
- Electrical insulations: Where high dielectric strength and thermal resistance are needed.
The dimensional precision, mechanical properties, and chemical resistance specified by ASTM D6867-19 make PFA tubing a preferred solution in demanding environments.
