Overview
EN 1464:2010 (CEN) specifies the floating roller method for determining the peel resistance of adhesive bonds between one rigid adherend and one flexible adherend. The standard defines test preparation, apparatus, specimen geometry, conditioning, test procedures (dry and wet), data reduction and reporting requirements. Results are expressed as average peel resistance in newtons per millimetre (N/mm).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Test method: Floating roller peel test producing more consistent numerical data than many other peel methods (note: the flexible adherend is not expected to fully conform to the roller).
- Apparatus:
- Constant-rate tensile testing machine (preferred crosshead rate: 100 ± 5 mm/min) with autographic recording and force measurement accuracy of ±1%.
- Peel test fixture with freely rolling 25 mm diameter rollers and dual roller bearings; fixture attaches to the testing machine cross-arm.
- Self-aligning grip engaging the outer 25 mm of the flexible adherend.
- Specimens:
- Preferred width: 25 mm (other widths allowed if stated).
- Flexible adherend thickness: 0.5 ± 0.02 mm.
- Rigid adherend thickness (metal): 2.5 ± 0.1 mm (can be thicker for other materials to reduce deformation).
- Minimum number of specimens: 5, unless specified otherwise by a material specification.
- Conditioning: Use standard laboratory atmospheres as per EN ISO 291.
- Procedure:
- Dry peel: peel continuously while recording force vs distance; disregard first 25 mm and last 25 mm; analyse at least 115 mm of peel.
- Wet peel: peel ~75 mm, apply water with a wetting agent (e.g., 0.5–1.0% detergent), then continue peeling.
- Data and evaluation:
- Determine average peel resistance (N/mm) from autographic curve using planimeter, gravimetric chart-area method, best-fit straight line, or computer-assisted methods.
- Record average, maximum and minimum forces and classify failure mode per EN ISO 10365.
- Reporting: Detailed test report requirements including adhesive and adherend identification, bond process, specimen details, conditioning, crosshead rate, calculation method and results.
Applications and Users
- Used by adhesive manufacturers, quality control and materials testing laboratories, R&D teams, and OEMs to:
- Compare peel performance of adhesives under standardized conditions.
- Validate adhesive selection for bonded assemblies involving a rigid and flexible component (e.g., metal‑to‑film laminates, tapes, labels).
- Support product specifications, quality assurance and failure analysis.

The EN 1464:2010 standard provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the peel resistance of adhesive bonds using the floating roller method. This method is particularly relevant for the evaluation of bonds that involve one rigid adherend and one flexible adherend. The scope of this standard is clearly defined, focusing on the conditions necessary for preparation and testing, which ensures consistency in results and applicability across various adhesive applications. One of the primary strengths of EN 1464:2010 is its established methodology that produces more consistent numerical data compared to other peel resistance testing methods. This makes the floating roller method a valuable tool for manufacturers and quality control specialists aiming for reliable assessments of adhesive performance. The emphasis on specified conditions enhances the reproducibility of results, allowing for better comparison across different tests and applications. The standard also addresses an important aspect of testing with flexible adherends, acknowledging that while the floating roller generates consistent data, it does not guarantee full conformity of the flexible adherend to the roller's surface. This insight is vital for users as it prompts them to consider the limitations of the method, thereby promoting more accurate interpretation of the results. In terms of relevance, EN 1464:2010 is crucial for industries reliant on adhesive technologies, including automotive, construction, and consumer products. It helps manufacturers ensure product safety and performance, aligning with industry requirements for high-quality adhesive applications. By standardizing the evaluation of peel resistance, this document supports continuous improvement in adhesive manufacturing, fostering innovation and competitiveness in the market. Overall, the EN 1464:2010 standard stands out as a key reference for professionals engaged in adhesive testing, offering a robust and methodical approach that enhances the reliability and validity of peel resistance evaluations.
