Overview
EN ISO 15874-1:2013/A1:2022 is a CEN-adopted amendment to EN ISO 15874-1:2013 - Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations (Polypropylene, PP) - Part 1: General. Published June 2022 and endorsed by CEN, this amendment adds a mandatory impact test (Charpy) requirement for polypropylene piping materials used in hot and cold water supply systems.
Key topics and requirements
- Amendment focus: Introduction of an impact (Charpy) test requirement into Clause 5 (new subclause 5.2: Material characteristics).
- Normative reference added: ISO 179-1 - Plastics - Determination of Charpy impact properties - Part 1: Non‑instrumented impact test.
- Material requirement (as added in Table 2):
- Charpy impact resistance: ≥ 4 kJ/m (test temperature 0 °C) - tested on notched specimens per ISO 179‑1/1eA.
- Condition for test specimens: specimens tested after 7 days from injection/machining.
- Exemption: the Charpy requirement does not apply to PP‑H materials (see footnote in the amendment).
- Editorial / implementation: CEN approved the ISO amendment without modification; member bodies were to adopt it as a national standard by December 2022.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of PP pipes, fittings and components - to verify material impact toughness and ensure product compliance for hot and cold water systems.
- Testing laboratories and QA teams - to perform Charpy impact tests per ISO 179‑1 and document results for conformity assessment.
- Specifiers and architects - to reference required material characteristics when selecting PP piping systems for residential, commercial or light‑industrial water installations.
- Regulators and certification bodies - for enforcement of national implementations of the EN ISO standard and inclusion in product approval/marking schemes.
- Installers and facility managers - to understand material robustness (impact resistance at low temperature) relevant to handling, transport and service conditions.
