Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Determination of thermal compatibility - Part 5: Resistance to temperature shock

This European Standard is the fifth of a series of five parts to assess the thermal compatibility of products and systems for the repair and protection of concrete. This part is relevant only to surface protection systems, and specifies a method for determining the resistance of surface protection systems to high temperature shock.
This test method is also suitable for testing the resistance of surface protection systems against hot chemicals.

Overview

EN 13687-5:2002 - "Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Determination of thermal compatibility - Part 5: Resistance to temperature shock" is a CEN test method for assessing the resistance of surface protection systems to high temperature shock. It is the fifth part of the EN 13687 series focused on the thermal compatibility of repair and protection products for concrete. The method is also suitable for evaluating resistance to hot chemicals.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies only to surface protection systems applied to reference concrete slabs (not to bulk repair mortars).
  • Reference substrate: Concrete slabs 400 × 400 × 50 mm prepared in accordance with EN 1766 (concrete mix MC (0,40)).
  • Curing / conditioning: Coatings cured at standard laboratory climate (21 ± 2 °C, 60 ± 10% RH) per manufacturer instructions; conditioning rules in Annex A.
  • Test apparatus:
    • Thermally insulated steel cylinder (internal Ø 300 mm, height 200 mm) with sealing flange and removable insulated lid (Annex B informative drawing).
    • Heating source, hot plate and stirrer (≈200 rpm).
    • Test liquid commonly silicone oil (minimum ~11 litres), or other hot chemicals agreed with manufacturer.
    • Thermocouple or thermometer fixed to the coating surface; diamond core drill and pull-off equipment per EN 1542.
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Mount coated slab in the cylinder, attach surface thermometer, clamp and seal.
    • Heat test liquid to agreed temperature (select in multiples of 10 °C). Example: testing below mastic asphalt: recommended (250 ± 5) °C.
    • Fill cylinder to ~155 ± 5 mm depth; after 3 minutes start stirrer 50 mm above the surface at ~200 rpm.
    • Test duration: 60 minutes. For mastic asphalt the surface temperature must reach (150 ± 5) °C within 7 minutes and exceed 85 °C at test end.
  • Evaluation:
    • Visual inspection for cracking (ISO 4628-4), flaking (ISO 4628-5), bubbling, spalling or de-bonding.
    • Adhesion measured by pull-off test (EN 1542) after at least 24 h cooling; clean test liquid residues with a solvent that does not affect dolly adhesion.
  • Test report: Must include reference to EN 13687-5:2002, lab & product IDs, specimen preparation and curing details, test temperature and liquid, observed defects, pull-off results (single/mean), and any deviations.

Applications and users

  • Useful for manufacturers of surface protection coatings (paints, thin-film membranes, barrier coatings) to validate thermal-shock resistance.
  • Employed by independent testing laboratories for product certification and performance data.
  • Used by specifiers, consulting engineers and contractors when selecting surface protection for structures exposed to high-temperature contact (e.g., asphalt paving, hot process discharges) or hot chemicals.
  • Relevant for quality control, product development and compliance testing in concrete repair and protection projects.

Related standards

  • EN 13687 series (Parts 1–4) - other thermal compatibility tests (freeze-thaw, thunder-shower, thermal cycling, dry thermal cycling)
  • EN 1542 - pull-off bond strength test
  • EN 1766 - reference concretes for testing
