Overview
EN 13785:2005/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment defining the constructional, operational and safety requirements for gas pressure regulators with a capacity of up to and including 100 kg/h and a maximum nominal outlet pressure of up to and including 4 bar, for butane, propane or their mixtures in the gaseous phase. The standard also covers associated safety devices incorporated in those regulators (see Annexes A and B). Regulators for caravans up to 1.5 kg/h are excluded (covered by EN 12864). Note: 1 bar = 10^5 Pa.
Keywords: EN 13785, LPG regulators, butane regulator, propane regulator, pressure regulator, safety devices, CEN standard.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Regulators ≤100 kg/h and nominal outlet pressure ≤4 bar for LPG (butane/propane/mixtures).
- Includes integrated safety devices and their characteristics (Annexes A & B).
- Definitions and interfaces
- Clarified definitions such as quick coupling, tap (manual closing device), self-closing valve, and freely rotating outlet connection.
- Materials
- Zinc alloys limited to Zn Al4 or Zn Al4 Cu1 (ISO 301); brass to EN 12164/EN 12165.
- Non-metallic components allowed only if not exposed to temperatures above 80 °C.
- Mechanical design and connections
- Threaded seals allowed up to nominal diameter DN50; parallel internal threads in zinc/aluminium permitted up to DN10.
- Country-specific inlet/outlet thread and non-threaded connection tables (Annex G/H) detail national practices.
- Adjustment and tamper-control
- Adjuster cannot be removed except when in the minimum-pressure position; rotational adjustment increases pressure clockwise.
- Performance and testing
- Impact resistance requirements for cylinder-mounted regulators (must survive specified fall and continue to operate).
- Endurance test limits: closing pressure change within ±5% and regulation curves must remain within specified envelope.
- Safety device performance
- Devices must cut off flow only when downstream pressure meets or exceeds the minimum inlet pressure required by the device.
Applications
- Design, manufacture and certification of LPG pressure regulators for domestic, commercial and light industrial uses where capacities ≤100 kg/h apply.
- Selection and testing of regulators mounted on LPG cylinders or fitted into gas distribution equipment.
- Product compliance documentation for market access within CEN member states.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Regulator and valve manufacturers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Gas appliance designers and OEMs (LPG systems)
- Safety and compliance engineers, installers and distributors
- National standardization and regulatory authorities
Related Standards
- EN 12864 (caravan regulators ≤1.5 kg/h)
- EN 13786 (related CEN/TC 181 work)
- EN 12164 / EN 12165 (copper/brass material specs)
- EN ISO 7253 (salt spray corrosion testing)
This standard is essential for ensuring safe, interoperable and market-compliant LPG regulators across Europe.
