Small craft - Hull construction and scantlings - Part 8: Rudders (ISO 12215-8:2009)

ISO 12215-8:2009 gives requirements on the scantlings of rudders fitted to small craft with a length of hull of up to 24 m, measured according to ISO 8666. It applies only to monohulls.
ISO 12215-8:2009 does not give requirements on rudder characteristics required for proper steering capabilities.
ISO 12215-8:2009 only considers pressure loads on the rudder due to craft manoeuvring. Loads on the rudder or its skeg, where fitted, induced by grounding or docking, where relevant, are out of scope and need to be considered separately.
Scantlings derived from ISO 12215-8:2009 are primarily intended to apply to recreational craft including charter craft.

L'ISO 12215-8:2009 prescrit des exigences d'échantillonnage des gouvernails installés sur les petits navires d'une longueur de coque inférieure ou égale à 24 m, mesurées conformément à l'ISO 8666. Elle s'applique uniquement aux monocoques.
L'ISO 12215-8:2009 ne prescrit aucune exigence concernant les caractéristiques du gouvernail nécessaires à une bonne manoeuvrabilité.
L'ISO 12215-8:2009 prend uniquement en compte les charges de pression s'exerçant sur le gouvernail du bateau lors des manoeuvres. This document (EN ISO 12215-8:2009) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 188 "Small craft"
in collaboration with CEN Sub-sector T01 “Shipbuilding and maritime structures”, the secretariat of which is
held by CMC.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by November 2009.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

For the complete scantlings of the craft, this document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 12215-8 for rudders, ISO 12215-9 for appendages of sailing craft and ISO 12215-10 for rig loads and rig attachment in sailing craft. ISO 12215-6 can be used for additional details.
Throughout this document, unless otherwise specified, dimensions are in (m), areas in (m2), masses in (kg), forces in (N), moments in (Nm), Pressures in (kN/m2) (1 kN/m2 = 1 kPa), stresses and elastic modulus in (N/mm2) (1 N/mm2 = 1 MPa).

This document defines the dimensions, design local pressures, mechanical properties and design stresses for the scantlings determination of monohull small craft with a hull length (LH) or a load line length (see NOTE 1) of up to 24 m. It considers all parts of the craft that are assumed to be watertight or weathertight when assessing stability, freeboard and buoyancy in accordance with ISO 12217.
NOTE 1    The load line length is defined in the IMO "International Load Lines Convention 1966/2005", it can be larger than LH for craft with overhangs. This length also sets up at 24 m the lower limit of several IMO conventions.
The main core of this document determines the local design pressures and stresses for monohulls and details the possible scantlings methods derived from these pressures and stresses, both for monohulls and multihulls (see NOTE 2). The evaluation of stability and buoyancy properties using this document will enable the boat to be assigned to a design category (A, B, C or D) appropriate to its design and maximum load.
This document is principally applicable to boats propelled primarily by sail (even if fitted with an auxiliary engine) of 6 m up to and including 24 m hull length. However, it can also be applied to boats less than 6 m if they are habitable multihulls or can be applied if they do not attain the desired design category specified in ISO 12217‑3 and they are decked and have quick-draining recesses which comply with ISO 11812.
In relation to habitable multihulls, this document includes assessment of susceptibility to inversion, definition of viable means of escape and requirements for inverted flotation.
This document excludes:
—    inflatable and rigid-inflatable boats covered by the ISO 6185 series, except for references made in the ISO 6185 series to specific clauses of the ISO 12217 series;
—    gondolas and pedalos;
—    surfboards including sailing surfboards; and

This document specifies design, type test methods, marking and instruction requirements for cylinder valves with integrated pressure regulators (VIPRs) intended to be fitted to gas cylinders, pressure drums or tubes or used as a main valve for bundles of cylinders that convey compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases.
These are requirements for VIPRs that are in addition to those given in the relevant closure standard, for example, in ISO 10297 for cylinder valves, in ISO 17871 for quick-release cylinder valves, in ISO 17879 for self-closing cylinder valves or in ISO 23826 for ball valves. For ISO 17871, these requirements are only applicable to quick-release cylinder valves types B, C, D and E.
NOTE 1        If the pressure regulating system of a VIPR is acting as the primary valve operating mechanism, it is covered by the relevant closure standard, e.g. ISO 10297, ISO 17871, ISO 17879 and ISO 23826. This also includes designs where closure of the primary valve operating mechanism of a VIPR is obtained by closing the seat of the pressure regulating system.
NOTE 2        If the primary valve operating mechanism of a VIPR is located at the low-pressure side of the pressure regulating system, it is covered by the relevant closure standard, e.g. ISO 10297, ISO 17871, ISO 17879 and ISO 23826.
NOTE 3        The term “pressure receptacle” is used within this document to cover instances where no differentiation is necessary between gas cylinders, bundles of cylinders, pressure drums and tubes.
This document does not apply to VIPRs for
a)       medical applications (see ISO 10524-3);
b)       liquefied petroleum gas (LPG);
c)        cryogenic applications.
NOTE 4        Additional requirements for a VIPR with a residual pressure device (RPD) are specified in ISO 15996.

This document specifies a method of determining the moisture content of a test sample of solid biofuels by drying in an oven and is used when the highest precision is not needed, e.g. for routine production control on site. The method described in this document is applicable to all solid biofuels. The moisture content of solid biofuels (as received) is always reported based on the total mass of the test sample (wet basis).
NOTE            Biomass materials can contain small amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC) which can evaporate when determining moisture content by oven drying (see References [1] and [2]). The release of such compounds is quite small relative to the overall moisture content as determined by this method and is disregarded in this document.
