General Information
Overview
EN 13036-6:2008 (CEN) specifies minimum requirements, classification rules and measurement procedures for profiling devices used to record transverse and longitudinal pavement profiles in the evenness and megatexture wavelength ranges. The standard covers static and dynamic methods (high‑speed, low‑speed and stationary devices), and includes recommendations for verification, calibration and reporting. It is intended to produce reliable profile data for research, surface characterization and subsequent indices used by highway and airfield authorities and equipment manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: clear definitions for longitudinal profile, transverse profile, wavelength, unevenness (0.5 m to 50 m) and megatexture (50 mm to 500 mm).
- Measurement modes: static and dynamic profiling; dynamic measurement is made from a device travelling in normal traffic flow at an agreed minimum speed (high‑speed permitted).
- Equipment classification: devices are classified with a code covering parameters such as travelled distance accuracy, vertical resolution, acquisition and reporting sampling intervals, large wavelength cut‑off and transverse gradient accuracy. Classes (typically 1–3) indicate performance capability.
- Key performance parameters (examples specified):
- Vertical resolution (longitudinal/transverse): Class 1 ≤ 0.2 mm; Class 2 ≤ 0.5 mm; Class 3 ≤ 1.5 mm.
- Longitudinal acquisition sampling interval: Class 1 ≤ 50 mm; Class 2 ≤ 125 mm; Class 3 ≤ 250 mm.
- Longitudinal reporting sampling interval: Class 1 ≤ 100 mm; Class 2 ≤ 250 mm; Class 3 ≤ 500 mm.
- Large wavelength cut‑off (–3 dB): Class 1 ≥ 100 m; Class 2 ≥ 50 m; Class 3 ≥ 10 m.
- Transverse acquisition spacing: Class 1 ≤ 75 mm; Class 2 ≤ 150 mm; Class 3 ≤ 350 mm.
- Transverse repetition/reporting intervals and transverse gradient accuracy are also defined by class.
- Procedures and quality control: operational guidelines, field testing, equipment maintenance and repair, and requirements for calibration and verification.
- Reporting: templates for calibration reports and survey reports to ensure data traceability.
Applications and users
- Primary users: highway agencies, airfield authorities, pavement researchers, and profilometer manufacturers.
- Practical uses: setting procurement and acceptance criteria for survey equipment; producing compatible profile datasets for ride quality, safety, pavement management, maintenance planning, and research into vehicle‑pavement interaction.
- Works with both routine network surveys (high‑speed profilometry) and detailed laboratory or construction quality control (static/stationary devices).

Introduction This European Standard details the criteria for classifying profilometers according to profiling capabilities as well as the procedures for measuring transverse and longitudinal profiles in the evenness and megatexture wavelength ranges, independent of the test method and the equipment used. The requirements regarding the performance of the measurement shall be independent of the measurement method used. This basic principle permits the development of new technologies and a variety of measurement devices without the need to modify this standard. This European Standard is restricted to requirements about measurement specifications (e.g. accuracy, resolution, wavelength range). Compliance with the requirements and classifications outlined in this standard will result in a geometrical representation of a profile intended to be used for research purposes or for further analysis aiming at summary indices for transverse profiles and/or longitudinal profiles in the evenness and megatexture wavelength ranges.
Evenness of pavements is important for reasons of safety, comfort and behaviour of vehicles, (pay)loads, road and bridge constructions, fuel consumption, etc. Evenness demands are related to the speed limits, the kind of traffic, the climatic conditions, the accepted comfort limits, etc. SIST EN 13036-6:2009
