Overview
EN ISO 1891-2:2014/A1:2021 is Amendment 1 to ISO 1891-2 (Fasteners - Terminology - Part 2: Vocabulary and definitions for coatings). Prepared by ISO/TC 2 (Fasteners) with CEN/TC 185, this amendment was approved in 2020 and adopted by CEN as EN ISO 1891-2:2014/A1:2021 (June 2021). The document is a vocabulary standard that clarifies and harmonizes terminology used for surface coatings on fasteners, ensuring consistent language across international and European technical documents, specifications and testing reports.
Key Topics
- Standardized vocabulary for coatings applied to fasteners: provides agreed definitions to remove ambiguity in technical communication between manufacturers, specifiers and regulators.
- Editorial corrections introduced by Amendment 1:
- Corrects the presentation of the related terms “finish - coating” (section 3.1.1).
- Revises wording in a note (3.6.7, Note 1 to entry) replacing “usually carried with” with the clearer phrase “typically performed with.”
- Multilingual and harmonized adoption: issued in English, French and German and adopted by CEN national bodies to ensure consistent use across European standards and national publications.
- Scope within the ISO 1891 series: Part 2 focuses on coatings vocabulary; other parts of ISO 1891 cover additional fastener terminology (see ISO website for the full series).
Applications
This vocabulary amendment is practical for anyone who needs unambiguous language about coatings on fasteners:
- Fastener manufacturers - to align product datasheets, process records and quality documentation.
- Coating suppliers and applicators - to ensure consistent communication about coating types, finishes and process descriptions.
- Procurement and specification writers - to reference correct, standardized terms in purchase orders and technical specifications.
- Testing and inspection labs - to report results using standardized definitions, improving comparability of data.
- Engineers and designers - to reduce misinterpretation when specifying coated fasteners for assemblies.
- Standards bodies and regulators - to harmonize national standards and legislation with the EN ISO edition.
Related Standards
- ISO 1891 series (other parts): consult the ISO catalogue for the full list of parts and related terminology standards.
- ISO/TC 2 and CEN/TC 185 deliver related fastener and surface-coating standardization work.
By using EN ISO 1891-2:2014/A1:2021 terminology, organizations benefit from clearer specifications, fewer disputes over coating requirements, and improved international interoperability for fastened assemblies. Keywords: fasteners terminology, coatings vocabulary, EN ISO 1891-2, surface coatings, fastener standards, CEN adoption.
