This document specifies a method using a barcoding system for tracing isolated defects that can be present in the following kinds of coated or uncoated steel flat products, for example:
- electro-galvanised surface;
- galvanised surface;
- galvannealed surface;
- cold rolled surface.
This method, named "quality tracking", aims to transfer additional material information to steel users, in particular the location of some isolated defects, in a reliable way. This method enables the manufacturer or purchaser to remove blanks or coils containing defects.
The method uses a 1D barcode to identify each section of steel strip.
NOTE 1 The stakeholders most involved in this technique are suppliers of steel flat products, car makers, appliance makers, part manufacturers, blanking line builders, steel processors, service centres, etc. All stakeholders can benefit from this project since defects can be traced, and, therefore, the steel containing defects can be eliminated or set apart of the production line.
NOTE 2 In the first stages of development, this method was called "defect tracking" (see [3]) and has been changed into "quality tracking" at the beginning of the standardization process.
NOTE 3 Quality tracking can be applied to other types of coated or uncoated steel flat products such as pickled and oiled, organic coated, and steels for packaging. Quality tracking can be applied for coiled materials for which the technology of quality tracking is applicable.
NOTE 4 If quality tracking data are used outside of the purpose of quality tracking, it is under the responsibility of the user.
NOTE 5 Quality tracking can be applied to other materials than steel.
NOTE 6 The way to collect the information to be transferred to the user is out of the scope of this document.

1.1 This European Standard applies to cold rolled narrow strip in coils and cut lengths in thicknesses up to 10 mm and of widths less than 600 mm, made from low carbon, unalloyed and alloyed steels in accordance with Table 1.
These products are suitable for cold forming. They are also suitable for surface coating. On the other hand, they are not suitable for hardening treatment followed by tempering.
1.2 This European Standard does not cover cold rolled flat products for which a separate standard already exists, particularly the following products:
- cold rolled non-oriented electrical steel sheet and strip delivered in the fully processed state (EN 10106);
- grain-oriented electrical steel sheet and strip delivered in the fully processed state (EN 10107);
- cold rolled electrical non-alloy and alloy steel sheet and strip delivered in the semi-processed state (EN 10341);
- cold rolled narrow steel strip for heat treatment (EN 10132 1 to −4);
- cold rolled steel flat products with higher yield strength for cold forming (EN 10268);
- cold rolled low carbon steel flat products for cold forming (EN 10130);
- cold reduced blackplate in coil form for the production of tinplate or electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel (EN 10205);
- cold rolled low carbon steel flat products for vitreous enamelling (EN 10209).

This European Standard specifies requirements for continuously electrolytic zinc coated cold rolled flat products of low carbon steels suitable for cold forming according to Table 1 in rolled widths above or equal to 600 mm and thicknesses from 0,35 mm up to and including 3 mm, delivered as strip (in coil form), sheet, slit strip or cut lengths obtained from slit strip or sheet.
NOTE 1 This European Standard can also be applied to continuously electrolytic zinc coated flat products of:
a) steels according to EN 10139 (cold rolled strip in rolled widths < 600 mm),
b) steels normally characterized by minimum yield strength or minimum tensile strength values in addition to formability parameters, e. g. 1) steels with high yield strength and improved formability according to EN 10268 (cold rolled flat products), 2) multiphase steels (cold rolled or hot rolled) according to prEN 10338, 3) steels for construction according to national or regional standards (see e. g. DIN 1623).
NOTE 2 By agreement at the time of enquiry and order this European Standard can be applied to continuously electrolytic zinc coated hot-rolled steel flat products (e.g. according to EN 10025-1 and -2, EN 10111, EN 10149-1 to EN 10149-3, etc.).
NOTE 3 As the mass of the zinc coating applied is relatively small, the material is not intended to withstand outside exposure without further chemical treatment and painting.

This European Standard specifies requirements for continuously hot-dip coated products made of low carbon steels for cold forming, of steels for construction, of steels with high proof strength for cold forming and coated with zinc (Z), zinc-iron alloy (ZF), zinc-aluminium alloy (ZA), aluminium-zinc alloy (AZ), aluminium-silicon alloy (AS) or zinc-magnesium alloy (ZM) and for continuously hot-dip coated products made of multiphase steels for cold forming coated with zinc (Z), zinc-iron alloy (ZF), zinc-aluminium alloy (ZA) or zinc-magnesium alloy (ZM) in thicknesses of 0,20 mm ≤ t < 3,0 mm.
By agreement at the time of enquiry and order, this European Standard is applicable to continuously hot-dip coated flat products of an expanded validity range defined for thicknesses t < 0,20mm or in thicknesses 3,0mm < t < 6,5mm with agreed mechanical properties and test specimens, adhesion of coating and surface condition requirements.
The thickness is the final thickness of the delivered product after coating.
This document applies to strip of all widths and to sheets cut from it (≥ 600 mm width) and cut lengths
(< 600 mm width).
NOTE 1 Products coated with (pure) aluminium can also be available, but are not covered by this European standard.
NOTE 2 The products covered by this European Standard are used where cold formability, high strength, a defined minimum yield strength and corrosion resistance are the most important factors. Corrosion resistance of the product is proportional to the coating thickness, hence to its mass (see also 7.3.2). The products covered by this European Standard can be used as substrates for organic coated flat products specified in EN 10169 for building and general engineering applications.
NOTE 3 By agreement at the time of enquiry and order, this European standard is applicable to other continuously hot-dip coated hot rolled steel flat products (e.g. in accordance with EN 10149-2).
