Natural stone test methods - Determination of frost resistance
This European Standard specifies a method to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on natural stones (see EN 12670 for terminology, and EN 12440 for denomination). The standard contains provision for both a shorter technological test (Test A) to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on the relevant performance characteristics and an identification test (Test B).
NOTE Some marbles, as defined in EN 12440, undergo changes in physical properties as a result of the test conditions rather than the freeze/thaw cycles. In these cases, additional tests (for example EN 14066) should be applied.
In diesen Fällen sollten zusätzliche Prüfungen (z.
Preskušanje naravnega kamna - Ugotavljanje odpornosti proti zmrzovanju

Overview - EN 12371:2010 (Natural stone test methods - Determination of frost resistance)
EN 12371:2010 is a CEN European Standard that specifies laboratory methods to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on natural stone. It defines two complementary test procedures: a shorter technological test (Test A) to evaluate the impact of freeze/thaw on relevant performance characteristics, and an identification test (Test B) to classify material behaviour under repeated freezing and thawing. The standard is intended for use by test laboratories, producers and specifiers of natural stone products to determine frost resistance and to support conformity assessment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Cycles of freezing in air followed by thawing in water are used to simulate natural freeze/thaw exposure and to assess physical deterioration.
- Test types:
- Test A (Technological test): Used when assessing specific performance characteristics (flexural strength, compressive strength, dowel-hole breaking load, etc.) - specimen dimensions and number follow the relevant product test standard.
- Test B (Identification test): Uses rectangular prisms (50 × 50 × 300 mm) - seven specimens representative of the stone body; the client may specify maximum cycles (default up to 168 cycles).
- Specimen preparation: Dry to constant mass at (70 ± 5) °C; controlled immersion schedule (stepwise to full immersion) with 48 ± 2 h pre-immersion before cycling.
- Monitoring and measurements:
- One specimen fitted with a thermocouple or equivalent to monitor core temperature.
- Dynamic elastic modulus (E0 and En) measured in accordance with EN 14146.
- Apparent mass/volume and saturation/dry masses measured throughout cycles to quantify changes (Md0, Ms0, Mh0, Mdn, Msn, Mhn, Vb0, Vbn).
- Equipment and tolerances: Freezing tank with cycle control (±2.0 °C), temperature recorder (±0.1 °C), accurate balances (0.01 %), ventilated oven.
- Failure criteria and cycle counting: EN 12371 defines when specimens are classed as failed (used to stop Test B); national annexes or product standards may give additional guidance.
Applications - who uses EN 12371:2010
- Test laboratories performing standardized durability testing of natural stone.
- Stone producers and processors evaluating product suitability for external exposure in cold climates.
- Architects, specifiers and façade engineers assessing material choice for pavements, cladding, monuments and exterior finishes.
- Standards bodies and compliance assessors using results to support certification and conformity with product standards.
