Overview

EN 1092-3:2003 is the CEN European Standard that specifies requirements for circular copper alloy flanges and copper-alloy collars used with loose steel plate flanges. It covers PN-designated flanges from PN 6 to PN 40 and nominal sizes DN 10 to DN 1800, and applies to flange types shown in the standard (plate, weld-neck, slip-on, blank, collars, integral flanges, etc.). The standard defines dimensions, tolerances, materials and their associated pressure/temperature (p/T) ratings, flange facings and surface finish, weld repairs, marking, and guidance on bolting, gaskets, installation and approximate masses.

Key Topics

  • Scope & compatibility
    • Applies to copper alloy flanges and collars intended for attachment to copper or copper-alloy tubes (per EN 12449). Use with tube sizes from EN 1057 requires agreement between manufacturer and supplier.
    • Non-gasketed pipe joints are excluded.
  • Flange types
    • Includes plate flanges, loose plate + collar combinations, weld-neck, slip-on, blank (including steel-clad joint face), hubbed types and integral flanges.
  • Dimensions & tolerances
    • Standardized mating dimensions for PN 6, 10, 16, 25, 40 and DN range; tolerances and bore options are specified for interchangeability.
  • Materials & identification
    • Lists acceptable copper-alloy materials and requires traceability/identification; certificates (EN 10204) may be required by the equipment manufacturer.
  • p/T ratings
    • Provides material-based pressure/temperature ratings; when mating flanges differ, the lower p/T rating governs the joint.
  • Fabrication, welding & repairs
    • Welding repair procedures and filler materials must ensure mechanical and metallurgical integrity; heat treatment where required.
  • Bolting & gaskets
    • Guidance on selecting bolting materials and referencing relevant gasket dimensions (EN 1514); bolting selection must suit design temperature, pressure and flange materials.
  • Marking & documentation
    • Requirements for marking flanges and information to be supplied by equipment manufacturers (Annex A); installation guidance in Annex B; mass tables in Annex C.

Applications & Users

EN 1092-3:2003 is used by:

  • Flange and collar manufacturers producing copper-alloy components
  • Pipe, valve and fitting equipment manufacturers specifying flange connections
  • Piping designers, HVAC/plumbing contractors and procurement teams requiring PN-designated copper-alloy flanges
  • Project engineers in industries where copper alloys are preferred (potable water, HVAC, marine, industrial services) Use of this standard ensures dimensional interchangeability, correct material selection and safe p/T performance for copper-alloy flanged joints.

Related Standards

The article discusses the European Standard EN 1092-3:2003, which specifies requirements for circular copper alloy flanges and copper alloy collars combined with loose steel plate flanges. The standard covers flanges with PN designations from PN 6 to PN 40 and nominal sizes from DN 10 to DN 1800. It includes specifications for dimensions, tolerances, materials, pressure/temperature ratings, flange facings, surface finish, weld repairs, marking, bolting, gaskets, application/installation, and approximate flange masses. The flanges are intended for attachment to copper or copper alloy tubes in accordance with EN 12449, with some exceptions. The standard does not cover non-gasketed pipe joints.
