Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structure - Test Method - Compatibility on wet concrete

This European Standard specifies a method for testing adhesion and perceptible changes in the coating during reverse side water action. The test covers situations such as:
- coating of young, water saturated, surface dry concrete (e.g. coating after 7 days);
- coating of old but water saturated, surface dry concrete;
- coated concrete with moisture from behind (without additional hydrostatic pressure), causing an alkaline attack to the coating.

- revêtement sur béton frais saturé en humidité, sec en surface (exemple revêtement après 7 jours) ;
- revêtement sur béton ancien saturé en humidité, sec en surface ;

Overview

EN 13578:2003 is a CEN European Standard titled Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structure - Test Method - Compatibility on wet concrete. It defines a laboratory method to assess adhesion and perceptible coating changes (peeling, blistering, discoloration) when coatings are applied to water‑saturated, surface‑dry concrete or when moisture acts from behind the substrate (reverse side water action). The method compares coated specimens on wet concrete with reference coatings on dry concrete, using visual assessment and pull‑off strength measurement.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Tests compatibility for situations such as coating young water‑saturated concrete (e.g., coated after 7 days), old water‑saturated concrete, or moisture/alkaline attack from behind.
  • Test specimens: Concrete slabs 300 × 300 × 60 mm made with concrete MC (0.40) and 8 mm aggregate; cast face prepared by grit‑blasting.
  • Preconditioning and storage:
    • Precondition slabs 14 days at (21 ± 2) °C / (60 ± 10)% RH.
    • Two slabs stored 7 days submerged at the minimum application temperature (MAT); two reference slabs stored in climate conditions (21 ± 2) °C / (60 ± 10)% RH and then at MAT.
    • After coating, submerged specimens are stored 56 days with the water level 10 mm below the coated surface; reference specimens stored in air at MAT and (75 ± 10)% RH as specified.
  • Application and MAT: Coating applied at the manufacturer’s specified minimum application temperature (MAT). (Note: MAT is normally between 5 °C and 8 °C.)
  • Inspection and criteria:
    • Visual evaluations for blistering, flaking and colour change using ISO 4628‑1, ‑2 and ‑5.
    • Pull‑off strength tested per EN 1542 (diamond core, 50 mm nominal diameter).
  • Equipment and procedure: Controlled laboratory climate ±2 °C and ±10% RH, water bath with supports, pull‑off test apparatus.
  • Reporting: Test report must include product ID, MAT, substrate preparation, number of coats, visual ratings, pull‑off results and type of failure. Precision data are currently not available.

Applications and users

This standard is practical for:

  • Coating and repair product manufacturers (R&D, quality control)
  • Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies
  • Specifiers, engineers and asset managers evaluating coating compatibility on damp or newly cast concrete
  • Contractors and consultants preparing performance specifications and tender documents
  • Failure analysis when moisture or alkaline attack is suspected

EN 13578:2003 helps ensure reliable performance of protective coatings in moisture‑prone conditions and supports risk‑based selection of systems for repair and protection of concrete structures.
