Windows and doors - Water tightness - Test method
This European Standard defines the test method to be used to determine the watertightness of completely assembled windows and doorsets of any materials. This test method is designed to take account of conditions in use, when the window or doorset is installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification and the requirements of relevant European Standards and codes of practice.
This European Standard does not apply to the joints between the window or doorset frame and the building construction.

Overview
EN 1027:2016 - Windows and doors: Water tightness - Test method is a CEN European Standard that defines a laboratory test procedure to determine the watertightness of fully assembled windows and doorsets of any material. The method simulates real exposure by continuously spraying a defined water film onto the external face of the specimen while applying controlled positive test pressures. EN 1027:2016 replaces EN 1027:2000 and is intended to be used when products are installed according to the manufacturer’s specification and relevant European standards. Note: the standard does not cover the seal between the frame and the building structure.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: continuous spraying of water over the external face while increasing positive test pressures in steps; record location and pressure of any water penetration.
- Test apparatus: sealed test chamber with open face, means to apply and rapidly change controlled pressures, and a spraying system using full circular-cone nozzles.
- Spraying system & nozzle requirements:
- Working pressure typically in the 2–3 bar range (manufacturer’s specifications).
- Nozzle flow rates: top row approx. 2 ± 0.2 l/min per nozzle; additional rows typically 1 ± 0.1 l/min or 2 ± 0.2 l/min depending on configuration.
- Nozzles spaced at 400 ± 10 mm along the spray bar; lateral clearance from surround >50 mm and ≤250 mm.
- Nozzle line positioned to ensure thorough wetting (not more than 150 mm above critical horizontal joints; specified distance from external face).
- Environmental & water conditions:
- Water temperature: 4 °C to 30 °C; water must be clean to avoid nozzle blockage.
- Specimen conditioning: at least 4 hours at ambient temperature 10 °C to 30 °C and relative humidity 25 % to 75 % prior to testing.
- Pressure protocol:
- Pre-test pressure pulses (three pulses) to 10 % above the maximum required test pressure (not less than 500 Pa).
- Spraying starts at 0 Pa for 15 minutes, then pressure increased every 5 minutes: steps of 50 Pa up to 300 Pa, then 150 Pa increments beyond 300 Pa.
- Instrumentation accuracy: water supply measurement within ±10 %; pressure measurement within ±5 %.
- Test report: must record specimen identification, design and materials, closing condition, spraying method, test climate, test pressures at penetration and drawings/photos showing leakage locations.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of windows, doors and curtain walling - performance verification and product development.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies - conformity testing for CE marking and product compliance.
- Architects, façade engineers and specifiers - selecting components for exposed locations and detailing for water management.
- Building inspectors and quality control teams - verifying installed product performance against lab evidence.
Related standards
- EN 1027 is part of the European suite of standards for windows and doors and is referenced alongside product-specific standards and installation codes of practice. It supersedes EN 1027:2000 and should be used together with relevant EN product standards for full compliance and assessment.
