Overview

EN 12697-28:2020 - Bituminous mixtures: Test methods - Part 28 defines standard procedures for preparing laboratory samples used to determine binder content, water content and grading of bituminous mixtures. Published by CEN, this part applies when the sample submitted to the laboratory has a mass greater than or equal to four times the required test portion. The 2020 edition updates the 2000/2002 versions and expands scope beyond only hot mix asphalt.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions
    • Defines terms such as representative sample, laboratory sample, test portion and test specimen.
    • Applies when the laboratory sample mass ≥ 4× test portion.
  • Apparatus
    • Typical equipment: balance, ruler, circular stone saw, oven (conventional or microwave), stopwatch, sample splitter (EN 932-1), shovel, containers.
  • Pre-treatment
    • Inspect and record sample condition on receipt; store slabs and cores to minimize deformation.
    • Record and manage binder drainage: collect drained binder and add proportionate fraction to test portion.
    • Note and record uncoated or fractured aggregate, coated chippings, tack coat, surface dressing and extraneous material.
  • Heat treatment
    • Reheat only as needed to facilitate mixing/separation.
    • Oven temperature limits depend on binder penetration class to reduce volatile loss (examples in the standard):
      • 330 pen: max 105 °C

      • 60–330 pen: max 120 °C
      • 25–60 pen: max 135 °C
      • < 25 pen: max 150 °C
    • Maximum oven residence: 4 hours.
  • Sample reduction
    • Reduce bulk sample to test portions by sample splitter or quartering (coning and quartering method).
    • Tabled masses specify minimum and maximum test portion masses by maximum aggregate size (e.g., ≤ 4 mm: 450–600 g; > 31.5 mm: 3 000–5 000 g).
    • Detailed procedures for multi-course slabs, separation of courses, and handling of free water are provided.
  • Traceability
    • Record all adjustments (e.g., removed chippings, added binder fraction) and any limitations affecting representativeness.

Applications and users

  • Organizations performing asphalt testing, pavement quality control and laboratory analysis:
    • Road materials laboratories, highway authorities, contractors, independent testing labs and pavement engineers.
  • Typical uses:
    • Preparing representative test portions for binder content analysis (extraction), moisture determination, and aggregate grading to support acceptance testing, forensic investigation and research.

Related standards

  • EN 12697 series (other parts cover extraction, grading and performance tests)
  • EN 12697-36 (determination of pavement thickness)
  • EN 932-1 (aggregate sampling and sample splitter guidance)

3.1
representative sample
bulk sample consisting of a specified number of increments purposely taken to represent a
specific quantity or area of material
Note 1 to entry: A representative sample is assumed to have the same composition as the material
sampled, within the limits of precision associated with the method of sampling.
3.2
laboratory sample
sample despatched to the laboratory
Note 1 to entry: It can be the whole or part of the bulk or representative sample and sufficient quantity
for all tests required.
3.3
test portion
part of the laboratory sample to be used for a specific test procedure to produce a single test
result
3.4
test specimen
part of the test portion on which a single test is carried out
Note 1 to entry: A number of tests might be necessary to produce a test result.
3.5
test result
result obtained by applying the test procedure to a test portion
Note 1 to entry: When the test procedure is required to be carried out on more than one test specimen,
the test result will be calculated as the mean result of a number of determinations.

separation of courses, take care so as to minimize deformation or deterioration of the material.
Store slabs on a clean, hard, flat surface, preferably out of direct sunlight, with the final rolled
surface at the bottom.
NOTE Cores of well compacted materials made with high viscosity binders will normally keep well
standing vertically upside down on a clean bench in a cool room, but cores cut from less stable materials
might require refrigeration especially for porous asphalt cores.
