Overview

EN 14246:2006 is a CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard that specifies definitions, requirements and test methods for factory‑made cast gypsum elements for suspended ceilings. It applies to gypsum units and tiles intended for interior suspended ceiling systems under universal substrates and sets reference tests, performance criteria and conformity evaluation procedures for manufacturers and specifiers.

Key scope points:

  • Covers reaction to fire, water vapour permeability, flexural strength (breaking load) and thermal resistance (thermal conductivity).
  • Addresses system‑level characteristics linked to assembled ceilings: fire resistance, direct airborne sound insulation and acoustic absorption (measured per the relevant European test methods).
  • Excludes metal ceiling grids, plasterboard products and stiffening timber roof truss applications.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Reaction to fire: Gypsum elements with <1% organic content by weight/volume can be classified A.1 (no contribution to fire) without testing; otherwise tested per EN 13501‑1. System fire resistance is assessed per EN 13501‑2.
  • Flexural strength: Reference flexural breaking loads when tested per the standard - tiles: 6 kg; units: 4 kg - to ensure handling and in‑service resistance.
  • Thermal properties: Design values of thermal conductivity are provided (dependent on gross dry density); the standard lists tabulated λ values for densities typically used in gypsum plaster products.
  • Water vapour permeability: Water vapour resistance factor guidance is provided; EN 12524 values may be used for moisture diffusion design.
  • Acoustic properties: Direct airborne sound insulation and absorption are system‑dependent; measurement methods referenced include EN ISO 140‑3, EN ISO 354 and rating methods EN ISO 717‑1.
  • Additional characteristics: Appearance, dimensions and tolerances, squareness, flatness, mass per unit area, moisture content and pH, plus requirements on regulated substances.
  • Testing & conformity: Sampling, specimen preparation and test procedures are detailed (Clause 6); conformity assessment, type testing and Factory Production Control (FPC) requirements are included, with guidance on CE marking in Annex ZA.

Applications and Who Uses It

EN 14246:2006 is used by:

  • Gypsum product manufacturers for product development, factory production control and CE marking.
  • Specifiers and architects to select gypsum ceiling elements meeting fire, thermal and acoustic performance targets.
  • Acoustic and fire engineers to assess system‑level properties when combined with grids and building structures.
  • Test laboratories and notified bodies performing reference tests and conformity assessment.
  • Contractors and procurement teams for acceptance criteria, dimensions, handling and installation checks.

Practical uses include product datasheets, tender specifications, performance declarations, and verifying compliance with EU Construction Products requirements.

Related Standards (if applicable)

  • EN ISO 140‑3, EN ISO 354, EN ISO 717‑1 (acoustics)
  • EN 12524 (thermal and moisture properties)
  • EN 13964 (suspended ceiling systems - grids) - noted as related but EN 14246 does not cover metal grids directly.

The article discusses the specifications and requirements for gypsum elements used in suspended ceilings. EN 14246:2006 is a European Standard that defines the characteristics and performance of factory-made cast gypsum elements, primarily used for constructing suspended ceilings. The standard covers various product performance characteristics such as reaction to fire, water vapor permeability, flexural strength, and thermal resistance. Additionally, it includes performance characteristics related to systems assembled with gypsum elements, such as fire resistance, sound insulation, and acoustic absorption. Tests should be conducted on assembled systems to simulate their end-use conditions. The standard also outlines reference tests for technical specifications and covers additional technical characteristics that are important for the construction industry's acceptance and use of these products. It provides a means for evaluating the conformity of the product to the standard. However, it does not cover metal ceiling grids, plasterboard products, or applications involving stiffening timber roof truss structures.
