Office furniture - Storage furniture - Part 1: Dimensions

This Technical Report gives recommendations for dimensions for office storage furniture.
The dimensions given in this Technical Report are based on the dimensions of the various products (i.e. ways of
data storing) to be stored in the furniture. Annex A gives some examples of storage furniture.
This Technical Report does not apply to high density mechanised filing systems, rotary filing systems, or drawing
office storage furniture.

Overview

CEN/TR 14073-1:2004 - Office furniture - Storage furniture - Part 1: Dimensions (CEN, 2004) is a Technical Report that gives recommended dimensions for office storage furniture. The recommendations are based on the physical sizes of the items to be stored (paper formats, filing systems and common informatic media). The report is informative and aimed at harmonizing storage furniture sizing across European office furniture manufacturers. It excludes high-density mechanised filing systems, rotary filing systems and drawing-office storage furniture. Annex A provides examples of storage furniture.

• Common paper formats (from EN ISO 216):
  • A3: 420 × 297 mm
  • A4: 297 × 210 mm
  • A5: 210 × 148 mm
  • Also lists: Foolscap, Folio, Listing formats
• Paper filing sizes (typical lever-arch and suspended files):
  • Lever-arch (A4): 320 × 290 mm, thickness 50–70 mm
  • Suspended file pockets (A4): ~275 × 330 or 262 × 318 mm, thickness 15–50 mm
• Informatic (computer) media dimensions:
  • 3.5” diskette examples, Zip, SyQuest, compact discs, VHS cassettes, etc., with typical heights/widths and thicknesses listed
• Dimensional guidance for furniture:
  • Manufacturers should specify outer (overall) dimensions (height, width, depth).
  • Inner storage space dimensions and modular combinations of data/paper storage must be defined by manufacturers.
  • Storage units intended to sit next to fixed-height work tables should match external height conventions (see EN 527-1).
  • When combined with desks or screens, widths/heights should be related to desk/screen dimensions and EN 527-1 / EN 1023-1.

This document provides information on the dimensions of office storage furniture.

office furniture manufacturers. It might be subject to revision in order to be kept up-to-date with developments of
