Overview

EN 1146:2005 is the CEN (European) standard that sets minimum requirements, testing and marking for self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus incorporating a hood for escape (escape hoods). It covers apparatus intended solely for emergency evacuation in occupational settings where the risk of pressure-vessel overpressurisation from high ambient temperatures is low. The standard includes laboratory and practical performance tests to assess compliance and excludes breathing apparatus for routine work or diving devices.

Key topics and technical requirements

EN 1146 addresses the complete life‑cycle and performance characteristics of escape breathing apparatus. Major topics include:

  • Design and ergonomics
    • Layout, harness, handling and mass/weight distribution for emergency use.
  • Hood and visor requirements
    • Construction, inward leakage, visor strength and seam/material integrity.
  • Breathing system performance
    • Inhalation/exhalation resistance, carbon dioxide content of inhaled air and exhalation valve performance.
  • Pressure components
    • Pressure vessels, pressure reducer, pressure relief valve options, and related high/medium/low pressure connections.
  • Materials and durability
    • Material compatibility, cleaning/disinfection, flammability resistance and mechanical strength (vibration, tensile and visor tests).
  • Environmental and temperature performance
    • Conditioning and tests for low and high temperature functioning.
  • Leak tightness and rated working duration
    • Leak testing of “ready for use” apparatus and verification of the declared escape duration under test conditions.
  • Practical performance tests
    • Full-apparatus escape trials and cold-weather performance checks.
  • Marking and documentation
    • Manufacturer marking, user information and instructions required for safe use and maintenance.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 1146 and why:

  • Manufacturers of escape breathing apparatus - to design, test and certify products for the European market.
  • Safety engineers and procurement specialists - to specify compliant escape devices for industrial sites, confined spaces, chemical plants, offshore installations, and other workplaces requiring emergency evacuation equipment.
  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies - to perform the standardized laboratory and practical tests required for conformity assessment.
  • Occupational health & safety professionals - to evaluate device suitability, training needs and maintenance regimes.
