Overview
EN 1496:2017 - Personal fall protection equipment - Rescue lifting devices is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies requirements, test methods, marking and manufacturer information for rescue lifting devices used as components of rescue systems. It supersedes EN 1496:2006 and covers both devices used for lifting a person (Class A) and devices with an additional short-distance lowering function (Class B). Rescue lifting devices to EN 1496:2017 may be combined with other PPE components (for example EN 341 descenders or EN 360 retractable fall arresters).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and classes: Defines Class A (lifting) and Class B (lifting plus lowering up to 2 m).
- Performance tests: Detailed dynamic and static tests (dynamic braking force limits, static strength to 10× maximum rated load or at least 12 kN for 3 minutes).
- Operating force / ergonomics: Lifting operation must be achievable with an operating force not exceeding 250 N when tested with a mass equal to the maximum rated load (minimum 100 kg).
- Materials & construction: Rules for lines (textile or steel wire), ropes/webbings (kernmantel or braided conforming to EN 1891 or ISO 2232), connectors (EN 362 compliance), and skin-contact materials (no known irritants).
- Corrosion resistance: Salt spray / corrosion testing requirements with allowance for non‑function‑affecting tarnish; not an automatic guarantee for marine suitability.
- Marking & information: Mandatory marking and user information to be supplied by the manufacturer (see Clauses 6 and 7).
- Test methods & sampling: Specifies sample sizes, test masses (A = max rated load ≥100 kg; B = 1.5× max rated load ≥150 kg; C = 30 kg), apparatus and procedures for dynamic, static, function and corrosion tests.
