Overview

EN 12042:2005/FprA1 (CEN amendment A1, 2010) updates the European standard for food processing machinery - Automatic dividers, clarifying safety and hygiene requirements for dough/dividing machines used in bakeries and food plants. The amendment defines significant hazards and protective measures for the whole lifecycle of automatic dividers: installation, adjustment, operation, cleaning, maintenance, dismantling, disabling and scrapping, including foreseeable misuse.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope of hazards: Specifies significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to automatic dividers and associated zones (feeding/hopper, dividing mechanisms, discharge, drive mechanisms, flour duster).
  • Machine design & risk reduction: Machines shall follow EN ISO 12100 principles for residual hazards; fixed guards must keep their fastenings attached when removed.
  • Safety-related control systems: Control parts must meet at least EN 954-1 category 1 or performance level c (PL c) per EN ISO 13849-1:2008.
  • Electrical safety: Conformance with EN 60204-1:2006 (electrical equipment), including power circuit protection, earth-fault rules for single-phase supplies, and motor enclosures providing at least IP23 where required.
  • Interlocks & access: Interlocking systems (e.g., movable steps) must meet control-system requirements; access to dividing zones and moving parts is controlled by guards and measured safety distances.
  • Emergency stop: The amendment states no emergency stop is required for automatic dividers, but the normal OFF switch must be clearly accessible from operator positions.
  • Hygiene & materials: Food-contact materials must meet EN 1672-2:2005+A1:2009 requirements; some plastics require migration testing. Surface finish guidance (µm roughness) is specified for food areas (examples: drawn/rolled ≤34 µm; moulded/cast ≤40 µm; machined/injected metals and plastics ≤34 µm).
  • Noise & documentation: Instruction handbook must declare airborne noise where relevant (e.g., A-weighted level >70 dB(A); peak C-weighted >63 Pa / 130 dB; sound power if workstation level >80 dB(A)), and include uncertainties and measurement conditions.
  • Verification & testing: Verification methods include inspection, calculation and functional testing (type and individual verification), with stability tests (machine remains stable when tilted 10°) and specific checks for flour dust, oil spill protection, pneumatic/hydraulic equipment and ergonomics.

Practical applications and users

This standard is used by:

  • Machine manufacturers and designers to build compliant automatic dividers.
  • Food processing engineers and integrators for specifying safe, hygienic equipment.
  • Safety managers and compliance officers ensuring conformity with EU machinery directives and preparing CE documentation.
  • Testing bodies and certification agencies conducting verification, functional tests and noise assessments.
  • Purchasing/specification teams writing procurement requirements for bakery/dividing equipment.

Related standards

EN 12042 references and aligns with other standards commonly used in machine safety and food machinery design, including:

  • EN ISO 12100 (risk assessment)
  • EN ISO 13849-1 (control system PL)
  • EN 60204-1 (electrical equipment)
  • EN 1672-2 (hygiene for food machinery)
