Overview

prEN 12608-2 (CEN) defines the classification, requirements and test methods for laminated unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC‑U) profiles intended for the fabrication of windows and doors. Part 2 of the EN 12608 series covers PVC‑U profiles that are covered with decorative or protective foils bonded with adhesives for external use. The document sets out how to assess materials, foils and adhesive systems and specifies relevant test methods for durability and performance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and terminology
    • Defines key terms such as base profile, laminated profile, foil and adhesive system used across lamination processes.
  • Classification
    • Classification of main base profiles by external wall thickness and impact resistance.
    • Classification of base profile materials and foils according to resistance to artificial weathering (UV resistance classes).
  • Requirements for base profiles
    • Material and appearance requirements, dimensional tolerances, heat reversion and impact resistance considerations (aligned with EN 12608‑1 where applicable).
  • Requirements for foils
    • Appearance, resistance to artificial weathering, solar direct reflectance and, where applicable, cross‑cut resistance for lacquered foils.
  • Requirements for adhesive systems
    • Adhesion of foils before and after artificial ageing; guidance for primer/glue systems and peel strength assessment.
  • Requirements for laminated profiles
    • Visual appearance, straightness, behaviour after heat storage, peel strength, and strength of welded corners and T‑joints.
  • Test methods
    • Visual inspection, peel strength determination after artificial ageing, spectral analysis for reflection behaviour (Annex C), and other referenced test standards (e.g., EN ISO 4892‑2 xenon‑arc weathering, EN 17271 peel testing).

Applications and who uses it

This standard is practical for:

  • PVC‑U profile manufacturers establishing product specifications for laminated profiles.
  • Window and door fabricators selecting durable laminated profiles for external installations.
  • Quality control and testing laboratories performing peel, weathering and adhesion tests.

Its scope is significant as it establishes comprehensive classifications, requirements, and test methods that ensure the quality and performance of these profiles in construction applications. One of the primary strengths of this standard lies in its detailed classification system, which allows manufacturers and quality control professionals to identify the specific properties and performance characteristics of laminated PVC-U profiles. This classification is essential for ensuring that the profiles meet the stringent demands of modern building projects, providing both structural integrity and aesthetic flexibility. Furthermore, prEN 12608-2 outlines clear requirements that must be met for compliance, thereby offering guidance to manufacturers in the production process. This not only helps in maintaining consistent quality across different products but also aids in meeting regulatory obligations in various markets. The inclusion of precise test methods within the standard adds another layer of reliability, allowing stakeholders to objectively assess the performance of laminated PVC-U profiles. The relevance of this standard cannot be overstated, particularly in a construction landscape that increasingly prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency. By specifying high-performance laminated PVC-U profiles for windows and doors, prEN 12608-2 supports efforts to improve thermal insulation and reduce the environmental impact of buildings. In summary, the prEN 12608-2 standard provides a vital framework for the use of laminated unplasticized polyvinylchloride profiles in windows and doors, balancing technical specifications with practical applicability. Its robust classification, stringent requirements, and effective test methods contribute significantly to the quality assurance processes in the construction sector.
