Copper and copper alloys - Plumbing fittings - Part 5: Capillary fittings with short ends for brazing to copper tubes

This document specifies product characteristics, assessment methods, compliance criteria of the test results and a designation system for capillary fittings with short ends for brazing to copper tubes e.g. EN 1057, EN 13348, EN 13349, EN 12735-1, EN 12735-2, etc. These fitting ends exist in two forms: end feed fittings and integral brazing ring fittings. For the purposes of joining copper tubes, the fitting ends have a nominal diameter from 14,7 mm to 159 mm. The fittings are designed for a service lifetime up to fifty years.
The fittings are used up to the operating temperatures and corresponding maximum operating pressures as indicated in Annex A.
This document applies to copper alloy fittings. A non-exhaustive list of these copper alloys is given in CEN/TS 13388.
The capillary fittings with short ends for brazing to copper tubes are used with brazing alloys in accordance with alloys specified in EN ISO 17672.
Not all copper alloys that can be used to manufacture fittings can be brazed and those that can be brazed may require different brazing techniques (guidance is provided in in EN 1254-20:2021, Annex A).
Fittings with short ends for capillary brazing may also have threaded end connections. These threaded ends exist with metallic and with non-metallic sealing elements. For the purposes of joining with tubes, pipes, fittings or valves, the threaded ends have a size range from 1/8" to 4".
Adaptor fittings for use with copper tubes may combine short ends for capillary brazing with fitting ends defined in the other parts of EN 1254.
Capillary fittings with short ends for brazing may also have flanged end connections according to EN 1092-3.
Fittings can be produced by machining, metal forming, casting, or fabrication.
Products covered by this document are intended to be used in:
a) liquid applications:
- hot, cold or combined hot and cold water, including systems according to EN 806;
- closed heating systems according to EN 12828;
- cooling systems;
- drainage systems;
- fire protection systems including sprinkler systems according to EN 12845;
- refrigeration systems;
- supply systems for points of consumption with liquid fuels according to EN 12514.
b) gas applications:
- natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas systems with a maximum operating pressure less than or equal to 5 bar according to EN 1775;- gas line systems with an operating pressure exceeding 0,5 bar for industrial installations and exceeding 5 bar for industrial and non-industrial installations according to EN 15001-1;
- compressed air systems;
- medical gas systems according to EN ISO 7396;
- refrigeration systems.

Kupfer und Kupferlegierungen - Fittings - Teil 5: Kapillarlötfittings mit geringer Einstecktiefe zum Verbinden mit Kupferrohren mittels Hartlöten

Dieses Dokument legt Produkteigenschaften, Bewertungsverfahren, Konformitätskriterien und ein Bezeichnungssystem für Kapillarfittings mit kurzen Enden zum Hartlöten von Kupferrohren fest, z. B. EN 1057, EN 13348, EN 13349, EN 12735-1, EN 12735-2 usw. Diese Fittingenden gibt es in zwei Formen: Lötfittings und Fittings mit integriertem Hartlötring. Zum Verbinden von Kupferrohren haben die Fittingenden einen Größenbereich von 14,7 mm bis 159 mm. Die Fittings sind für eine Lebensdauer von bis zu fünfzig Jahren ausgelegt.
Die Fittings werden bis zu den in Anhang A angegebenen Betriebstemperaturen und maximalen Betriebsdrücken eingesetzt.
Dieses Dokument gilt für Fittings aus Kupferlegierungen. Eine nicht vollständige Liste dieser Kupferlegierungen ist in CEN/TS 13388 enthalten.
Kapillarfittings mit kurzen Enden zum Hartlöten von Kupferrohren werden mit Hartloten nach den in EN ISO 17672 spezifizierten Legierungen verwendet.
Nicht alle Kupferlegierungen, die zur Herstellung von Fittings verwendet werden können, können hartgelötet werden, und diejenigen, die hartgelötet werden können, können andere Hartlöttechniken erfordern (Hinweise siehe prEN 1254-20:2019, Anhang A).
Kapillarfittings mit kurzen Enden zum Hartlöten von Kupferrohren dürfen auch Gewindeanschlüsse aufweisen. Diese Gewindeenden gibt es mit metallischen und mit nichtmetallischen Dichtelementen. Zum Verbinden von Rohren, Fittings oder Ventilen haben die Gewindeenden einen Größenbereich von 1/8" bis 4".
Übergangsfittings für Kupferrohre dürfen kurze Enden zum Kapillarhartlöten mit in den anderen Teilen der EN 1254 definierten Fittingenden kombinieren.
Kapillarfittings mit kurzen Enden zum Hartlöten dürfen auch Flanschendanschlüsse nach EN 1092-3 aufweisen.
Fittings können durch Bearbeiten, Metallumformen, Gießen oder Fertigen hergestellt werden.
Die unter diese Norm fallenden Produkte sind für den Einsatz bestimmt in:
a)   Flüssigkeitsanwendungen:
-   Warm-, Kalt- oder kombinierte Warm-/Kaltwassersysteme nach EN 806;
-   geschlossene Heizsysteme nach EN 12828 und Kühlsysteme;
-   Entwässerungssysteme;
-   Sprinkleranlagen nach EN 12845;
-   Kältetechnik.
b)   Gasanwendungen:
-   Erdgas- und Flüssiggasanlagen mit einem maximalen Betriebsdruck von weniger als oder gleich 5 bar nach EN 1775;
-   Druckluftsysteme;
-   Systeme für medizinische Gase nach EN ISO 7396;
-   Kältetechnik.

Cuivre et alliages de cuivre - Raccords - Partie 5 : Raccords à emboîture courte pour brasure forte par capillarité pour tubes en cuivre

Le présent document spécifie les caractéristiques de produit, les méthodes d'évaluation, les critères de
conformité des résultats d’essais et un système de désignation pour les raccords à emboîture courte pour
brasure forte par capillarité pour tubes en cuivre conformes, par exemple, aux EN 1057, EN 13348,
EN 13349, EN 12735-1, EN 12735-2, etc. Ces extrémités de raccords existent sous deux formes : raccord
d'alimentation d’extrémité et raccords à anneau de brasure forte incorporé. Pour l'assemblage de tubes
en cuivre, les extrémités de raccords ont un diamètre nominal compris entre 14,7 mm et 159 mm. Les
raccords sont conçus pour une durée de vie en service supérieure à 50 ans.

Les raccords à emboîture courte pour brasure forte par capillarité pour tubes en cuivre sont utilisés avec
des alliages de brasage fort conformément aux alliages spécifiés dans l’EN ISO 17672.
Les alliages de cuivre utilisés pour fabriquer des raccords ne peuvent pas tous être assemblés par brasage
fort, et ceux qui peuvent être assemblés par brasage fort peuvent nécessiter de différentes techniques de
brasage fort (des lignes directrices sont fournies dans le l’EN 1254-20:2021, Annexe A).
Les raccords à emboîture courte pour le brasage fort par capillarité peuvent également comporter des
extrémités filetées. Ces extrémités filetées existent avec des éléments d'étanchéité métalliques et non
métalliques. Pour l'assemblage avec des tubes, des tuyaux, des raccords ou des vannes, les extrémités
filetées ont une gamme de dimensions comprise entre 1/8" et 4".

conformes à l’EN 12514.
b) les applications de gaz :
- les systèmes fonctionnant au gaz naturel et des systèmes fonctionnant au gaz de pétrole liquéfiés
avec une pression maximale de service inférieure ou égale à 5 bar, conformément à l'EN 1775 ;
- les systèmes de conduites de gaz avec une pression de service supérieure à 0,5 bar pour les
installations industrielles et supérieure à 5 bar pour les installations industrielles et non
industrielles, conformément à l’EN 15001-1 ;
- les systèmes d’air comprimé ;
- les systèmes de distribution de gaz médicaux conformes à l’EN ISO 7396 ;
- les systèmes réfrigération.

copper alloys”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2021, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by November 2021.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 1254-20:2021 apply.

4 Product characteristics
4.1 Internal pressure
When tested according to the method in 5.2 fittings shall show no signs of leakage or permanent
distortion.
4.2 Tightness
4.2.1 Leak tightness under internal hydrostatic pressure
Fittings assessed as indicated in 4.1 are considered to be leak tight under internal hydrostatic pressure.
4.2.2 Integrity of fabricated fitting bodies or having an 'as cast' microstructure
This requirement only applies to fitting bodies with an 'as cast' microstructure (excluding continuously
cast materials) or fabricated by welding or brazing.
When tested according to the method in 5.3 fitting bodies shall show no visual indication of leakage.
4.3 Release of dangerous substances
National regulations on dangerous substances may require verification and declaration on release, and
sometimes content, when construction products covered by this document are placed on those markets.
In the absence of European harmonized test methods, verification and declaration on release/content
should be done taking into account national provisions in the place of use.

4.4 Durability
4.4.1 Durability of internal pressure: Resistance to stress corrosion
Fittings manufactured from copper and copper-tin-zinc alloys (CuSnZnPb) shall be considered to be
resistant to stress corrosion according to EN 12502-2 and copper-zinc-silicon alloys containing ≥ 2 % Si
are also considered to be resistant.
Fittings manufactured from CuZn-alloys shall be considered to be resistant to stress corrosion when the
product has a hardness HBW 2,5/62,5 ≤ 110 measured according to EN ISO 6506-1 or a hardness

HV ≤ 134 measured according to EN ISO 6507-1.

Fittings manufactured from copper alloys with a zinc content of 10 % or greater not mentioned above
shall be tested and assessed according to 5.4.1, and shall show no evidence of cracking.

4.4.2 Durability of tightness: Residual carbon contamination in the bore
4.4.2.1 General
This requirement only applies for copper fittings. This requirement does not apply for copper alloy
fittings.
4.4.2.2 Carbon film
When tested according to 5.4.2.1 there shall not be any visible carbon film.
4.4.2.3 Total carbon
When tested according to 5.4.2.2 the maximum total carbon level on internal surfaces shall not exceed

1,0 mg/dm .
4.5 Dimensional tolerances of diameters
In order to achieve the capillary flow of a brazing alloy when making a connection, the dimensions of a
socket or male end shall be tightly controlled.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.5, the diameter shall be within the tolerances
expressed in Table 1 for the relevant diameters.

4.6 Wall thickness for short ends for capillary brazing to copper tubes
When measured according to the method specified in 5.6, the minimum wall thickness shall be as
expressed in Table 2 for the relevant diameters and different forms of the material.
The minimum wall thickness requirements do not apply under embossed marking on the socket end.

In the case of integral brazing ring fittings where a groove is made within the brazing length, the
minimum wall thickness measured within or immediately adjacent to the brazing groove (see Figure 1)
shall be in accordance with dimension e' in Table 2.

4.7 Wall thickness at threaded portions of adaptor fittings
This requirement only applies to fittings with an interface thread.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.7 the minimum wall thickness at the interface
thread shall be as expressed in EN 1254-20:2021, 4.1 for the relevant diameters.
4.8 Dimensions of tail pipe ends for swivel fittings
This requirement only applies to tail pipe ends for swivel fittings.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.8 the dimensions shall be as expressed in
EN 1254-20:2021, 4.2 for the thread size.
4.9 Dimensions of gas union connectors
This requirement only applies to fittings with gas union connectors.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.9 the dimensions shall be as expressed in
EN 1254-20:2021, 4.3 for corresponding nominal size.
4.10 Threaded end dimensions
This requirement only applies to fitting bodies with threaded ends.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.10 the thread shall be in accordance with
EN 1254-20:2021, 4.4.
4.11 Other adapter ends (not defined in EN 1254-20:2021)
Other adapter ends, when assembled in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and pressure
tested according to the method in 5.2 shall show no signs of leakage or permanent distortion. When re-
tested in accordance with the test method in 5.2 after disconnection and reconnection, it shall again
show no signs of leakage or permanent distortion. If after disconnection the sealing element shows
signs of damage, it shall be replaced before the second test.

4.12 Length of engagement
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.11, the minimum length of engagement shall be
as expressed in Table 3 for the relevant diameters.

braze to produce a sound joint on assembly with the correct size of tube.
Male ends intended for use with integral ring sockets shall include an allowance for the width of the
brazing alloy groove.
When the male end diameter is less than the fitting diameter (see Figure 3), the length of the male end
shall be increased to L (see Table 3).

4.13 Bore dimensions
To minimize flow resistance, minimum bore dimensions are required.
When assessed according to the test method in 5.12, the minimum bore of the fitting shall be greater or
equal to the values expressed in EN 1254-20:2021, 4.5, Table 9, for the relevant nominal diameter.
For unequal-ended or adaptor fittings, the smallest diameter shall apply provided that this diameter
does not restrict other outlets.
Bores at threaded portions of fittings shall not restrict other outlets.

4.14 Tube abutment
This requirement does not apply to threaded ends.
Fitting ends are usually manufactured with an abutment to limit tube insertion (see Figure 4) and to
ensure that the minimum length of engagement between tube and fitting is satisfied.
Fittings may be produced for special purposes, particularly useful for repairs, where the fitting ends do
not incorporate abutments, allowing for the fitting to slide along a tube.
The dimensions of the abutment shall be such that it will stop the smallest possible tube according to
EN 1057:2006+A1:2010, Table 4. The abutment shall also satisfy the minimum bore requirement as
stated in 4.13.

4.15 Alignment of the fitting ends
When tested according to the method in 5.13, the alignment of the fitting ends with reference to the
specified axis shall be within ± 2 °.
4.16 Shapes for tightening systems
When visually inspected, fittings with threads shall have a shape or suitable features for the
transmission of tightening torques.
4.17 Surface condition
When visually inspected, fittings shall be free from sharp edges or burrs.
4.18 Surface cleanliness for medical gases
The inner and outer surfaces of the fittings shall be clean and smooth.
The surface of the fitting shall be capable of meeting the residual carbon contamination requirement
specified in 4.4.2.2.

human consumption if they comply with the relevant national, regional or local regulatory provisions
applicable in place of use.

1 Scope
This document specifies product characteristics, assessment methods, compliance criteria and a
designation system for capillary fittings with short ends for brazing to copper tubes e.g. EN 1057,
EN 13348, EN 13349, EN 12735-1, EN 12735-2, etc. These fitting ends exist in two forms: end feed
fittings and integral brazing ring fittings. For the purposes of joining copper tubes, the fitting ends have
a size range from 14,7 mm to 159 mm. The fittings are designed for a service lifetime up to fifty years.
The fittings are used up to the operating temperatures and maximum operating pressures as indicated
in Annex A.
This document applies to copper alloy fittings. A non-exhaustive list of these copper alloys is given in
CEN/TS 13388.
The capillary fittings with short ends for brazing to copper tubes are used with brazing alloys in
accordance with alloys specified in EN ISO 17672.
Not all copper alloys that can be used to manufacture fittings can be brazed and those that can be
brazed may require different brazing techniques (guidance is provided in in prEN1254–20:2019,
Annex A).
Fittings with short ends for capillary brazing may also have threaded end connections. These threaded
ends exist with metallic and with non-metallic sealing elements. For the purposes of joining with tubes,
pipes, fittings or valves, the threaded ends have a size range from 1/8” to 4”.
Adaptor fittings for use with copper tubes may combine short ends for capillary brazing with fitting
ends defined in the other parts of EN 1254.
Capillary fittings with short ends for brazing may also have flanged end connections according to
EN 1092-3.
Fittings can be produced by machining, metal forming, casting, or fabrication.
Products covered by this standard are intended to be used in:
a) liquid applications:
— hot, cold or combined hot and cold water systems according to EN 806;
— closed heating systems according to EN 12828 and cooling systems;
— drainage systems;
— sprinkler systems according to EN 12845;
— refrigeration systems.
b) gas applications:
— natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas systems with a maximum operating pressure less than
or equal to 5 bar according to EN 1775;
— compressed air systems;
— medical gas systems according to EN ISO 7396;
— refrigeration systems.

4 Product characteristics
4.1 Internal pressure
When tested according to the method in 5.2 fittings shall show no signs of leakage or permanent
distortion.
4.2 Tightness
4.2.1 Leak tightness under internal hydrostatic pressure
Fittings assessed as indicated in 4.1 are considered to be leak tight under internal hydrostatic pressure.
4.2.2 Integrity of fabricated fitting bodies or having an 'as cast' microstructure
This requirement only applies to fitting bodies with an 'as cast' microstructure (excluding continuously
cast materials) or fabricated by welding or brazing.
When tested according to the method in 5.3.1 fitting bodies shall show no visual indication of leakage.
4.3 Release of dangerous substances
National regulations on dangerous substances may require verification and declaration on release, and
sometimes content, when construction products covered by this standard are placed on those markets.
In the absence of European harmonized test methods, verification and declaration on release/content
should be done taking into account national provisions in the place of use.
4.4 Durability
4.4.1 Durability of internal pressure
4.4.1.1 Resistance to stress corrosion
Fittings manufactured from copper and copper-tin-zinc alloys (CuSnZnPb) shall be considered to be
resistant to stress corrosion according to EN 12502-2 and copper-zinc-silicon alloys containing ≥ 2 % Si
are also considered to be resistant.
Fittings manufactured from CuZn-alloys shall be considered to be resistant to stress corrosion when the
product has a hardness HBW 2,5/62,5 ≤ 110 measured according to EN ISO 6506-1 or a hardness

HV ≤ 134 measured according to EN ISO 6507-1.

Fittings manufactured from copper alloys with a zinc content of 10 % or greater not mentioned above
shall be tested and assessed according to 5.4.1.1, and shall show no evidence of cracking.
4.4.2 Durability of tightness
4.4.2.1 Residual carbon contamination in the bore
This requirement only applies for copper fittings. This requirement does not apply for copper alloy
fittings.
4.4.2.1.1 Carbon film
When tested according to 5.4.2.1 there shall not be any visible carbon film.
4.4.2.1.2 Total carbon
When tested according to 5.4.2.2 the maximum total carbon level on internal surfaces shall not exceed

1,0 mg/dm .
4.5 Dimensional tolerances of diameters
In order to achieve the capillary flow of a solder or brazing alloy when making a connection, the
dimensions of a socket or male end shall be tightly controlled.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.5, the diameter shall be within the tolerances
expressed in Table 1 for the relevant diameters.

4.6 Wall thickness for short ends for capillary brazing to copper tubes
When measured according to the method specified in 5.6, the minimum wall thickness shall be as
expressed in Table 2 for the relevant diameters and different forms of the material.
The minimum wall thickness requirements do not apply under embossed marking on the socket end.
In the case of integral solder or brazing ring fittings where a groove is made within the soldering or
brazing length, the minimum wall thickness measured within or immediately adjacent the solder
groove (see Figure 1) shall be in accordance with dimension e' in Table 2.

4.7 Wall thickness at threaded portions of adaptor fittings
This requirement only applies to fittings with an interface thread.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.7 the minimum wall thickness at the interface
thread shall be as expressed in prEN 1254-20:2019, 4.1 for the relevant diameters.
4.8 Dimensions of tail pipe ends for swivel fittings
This requirement only applies to tail pipe ends for swivel fittings.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.8 the dimensions shall be as expressed in
prEN 1254-20:2019, 4.2 for the thread size.
4.9 Dimensions of gas union connectors
This requirement only applies to fittings with gas union connectors.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.9 the dimensions shall be as expressed in
prEN 1254-20:2019, 4.3 for corresponding nominal size.
4.10 Threaded end dimensions
This requirement only applies to fitting bodies with threaded ends.
When assessed according to the method specified in 5.10 the thread shall be in accordance with
prEN 1254-20:2019, 4.4.
4.11 Other adapter ends (not defined in prEN 1254-20:2019)
Other adapter ends, when assembled in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and pressure
tested according to the method in 5.2 shall show no signs of leakage or permanent distortion
