This standard describes a bench test method for the measurement of the emission rate of a specified airborne hazardous substance from machines using a test rig under specified operating conditions of the machine.   This standard does not specify any value for the air velocity of the inhalable particles.   The measurement of the emission rates of a specified pollutant emitted from machines can serve for:   a) the evaluation of the performance of a machine;  b) the evaluation of the improvement of the machine;  c) the comparison of machines within groups of machines with the same intended use (groups are defined by the function and materials processed); d) the ranking of machines from the same group according to their emission rates; e) the determination of the state of the art of machines with respect to their emission rate.

Diese Norm beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Messung der Emissionsrate eines festgelegten luftgetragenen Gefahrstoffes von Maschinen in einem Prüfstandes unter festgelegten Betriebsbedingungen der Maschine. Die Norm legt keinen Wert für die Luftgeschwindigkeit zur Messung von einatembaren Staub fest. Die Messung der Emissionsraten eines fesgelegten luftverunreinigenden Stoffes bei der Emission von Maschinen kann dienen: a) zur Bewertung des Betriebsverhaltens einer Maschine; b) zur Bewertung von Verbesserungsmaßnahmen an der Maschine.

Cette norme décrit une méthode sur banc d'essai pour le mesurage du débit d'émission d'une substance dangereuse spécifiée véhiculée par l'air en utilisant  une cabine d'essai et dans les conditions définies de fonctionnement des machines. Cette norme ne spécifie aucune valeur de vitesse d'air pour la détermination des particules inhalables. Le mesurage des débits d'émission d'un polluant spécifié émis par les machines peut être utile pour: a) l'évaluation de la performance d'une machine; b) l'évaluation des améliorations apportées à cette machine.

This method uses the real pollutant (see 4.2 of EN 1093-1 : 1998 “ Safety of machinery — Evaluation of the emission of airborne  hazardous substances — Part 1: Selection of test methods”) and can be operated in room or field environments.
It should be observed that during the test, especially during the shutdown or the removal of the pollution control system, the concentration of hazardous substances , if present, can reach levels which are liable to incur a risk to the health of the operators or other occupants present in the room.
Warning: This standard does not deal with the protective measures required to control these risks.
Measurement of the decontamination index of pollution control system can serve for the:
–   evaluation of the performance of a pollution control system of a machine;
–   evaluation of the improvement of a pollution control system;
–   comparison of pollution control systems for machines of similar design;
–   ranking of pollution control systems according to their decontamination efficiency;
–   determination of the air flow rate in the case of an exhaust system to achieve a given level;
–   determination of the state of the art of pollution control systems for machines with respect to the decontamina¬tion efficiency.
