Overview

prEN 360 (CEN) defines requirements for personal fall protection equipment - retractable type fall arresters. This draft European Standard covers design, performance, testing, marking and manufacturer information for retractable fall arresters with a single retractable lanyard. It applies to devices intended for vertical (overhead) use up to 45° from true vertical (Type A) and to devices that can also be used horizontally (Type B). Retractable assemblies with more than one lanyard are excluded. Retractable arresters compliant with prEN 360 are components of the fall arrest systems covered by EN 363.

  • Scope & definitions: Clear classification of Type A (vertical) and Type B (vertical + horizontal) retractable fall arresters; single-lanyard devices only.
  • Design & ergonomics: Requirements for housing, attachment points, swivels and user interface to support safe use and deployment.
  • Materials & construction: Criteria for materials, metal parts and wire ropes consistent with structural steel and rope standards.
  • Retraction performance: Tests to verify automatic tensioning and return of the retractable lanyard.
  • Static strength: Static load tests to confirm structural integrity under specified loads.
  • Dynamic performance: Dynamic arrest tests (including maximum/minimum rated load, near-full extraction) to assess energy dissipation and locking behavior.
  • Edge and horizontal tests: Special dynamic tests for use over edges and with lateral offsets to simulate real-world anchoring and edge contact.
  • Conditioning & durability: Environmental conditioning (heat, cold, wet, corrosion) before testing to ensure performance after exposure.
  • Dynamic strength & integrity: Post-arrest inspection criteria and integrity tests to confirm no hazardous deformation or failure.
  • Marking, documentation & packaging: Mandatory markings, pictograms (Type A/B), and manufacturer-supplied information including minimum clearance diagrams and instructions for use, maintenance and periodic examination.
