Overview

EN 1062-3:2008 is a CEN European standard that specifies a laboratory test method for determining the liquid water permeability of paints, varnishes, coating materials and coating systems intended for exterior masonry and concrete. It is designed to support classification under EN 1062-1 and applies to coatings on porous substrates such as brick, concrete and renderings. Note: the method cannot accurately quantify very high permeability values (w > 0,5 kg/(m²·h0,5)).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Measures liquid water transmissibility (w) of coating systems on porous mineral substrates for exterior use and provides data for EN 1062-1 classification.
  • Substrates: Typical substrates include calcium silicate bricks, clay bricks or mortar slabs. Test blocks must be ≥ 200 cm² and ≥ 2.5 cm thick and have a substrate water absorption coefficient (EN ISO 15148) > 1 kg/(m²·h0,5).
  • Specimens and replication: Minimum of three test specimens (more recommended to detect outliers).
  • Preparation:
    • Apply coatings per manufacturer instructions and dry (minimum drying and specific conditioning steps).
    • Seal reverse/edges (e.g., two coats epoxy) leaving test surface exposed with a 5–10 mm overlap.
  • Aging / conditioning: Three cycles of 24 h immersion in potable water at (23 ± 2) °C followed by 24 h drying at (50 ± 2) °C to simulate outdoor ageing and leaching, with final conditioning in standard atmosphere (23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5 % RH).
  • Test apparatus: Water container, oven capable of (50 ± 2) °C, balance (0.1 g resolution up to 2000 g), specimen supports.
  • Procedure: Immerse coated face 5–10 mm below water surface; record mass gain at intervals (recommended: 10 min, 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 6 h and 24 h).
  • Expression of results: w (kg/m²·h0,5) = mass increase (kg) / area (m²) / sqrt(time). Use arithmetic mean of at least three results for EN 1062-1 classification.
  • Precision: Repeatability ~10% (within lab), reproducibility ~15% (between labs).
  • Reporting: Include reference to EN 1062-3:2008, product ID, specimen count, coating system details, substrate type/dimensions, individual and mean results, classification, deviations and observations.

The EN 1062-3:2008 standard provides a comprehensive approach to determining the liquid water permeability of paints and varnishes specifically designed for exterior masonry and concrete substrates. The scope of this European Standard is well-defined, focusing on the performance criteria of coatings and coating systems when applied to porous surfaces such as brick, concrete, and renderings. One of the key strengths of this standard lies in its systematic methodology for quantifying liquid water permeability, which is crucial for understanding how these coatings will interact with moisture in exterior environments. The standard emphasizes the significance of proper selection and application of coating materials to enhance durability and prevent moisture-related issues. Furthermore, the classification provided according to EN 1062-1 ensures that users can effectively compare and assess different products based on their water permeability performance. This classification contributes to informed decision-making in selecting appropriate coatings, thereby directly impacting the quality and longevity of masonry and concrete structures exposed to the elements. However, it is worth noting that the method specified in EN 1062-3:2008 indicates that it may not accurately quantify liquid water permeability for coatings with a permeability exceeding 0.5 kg/(m² x h^0.5). This limitation should be taken into consideration by practitioners to ensure they are utilizing suitable testing methods alongside the standard for high-permeability coatings. Overall, EN 1062-3:2008 stands out as an essential standard for industry professionals involved in the formulation, application, and evaluation of exterior coatings, ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet performance expectations related to liquid water permeability. Its relevance continues to grow, particularly as the construction industry increasingly focuses on material sustainability and resilience against environmental factors.
