Couplers, spigot pins and baseplates for use in falsework and scaffolds - Part 3: Plain base plates and spigot pins - Requirements and test procedures

EN 74-3 specifies for non adjustable base plates and loose spigots to be used with 48,3 mm diameter tubes in scaffolds and falsework:
-   materials;
-   design requirements;
-   test procedure;
-   assessment.
A base plate with a means of limited vertical adjustment, called a "base jack", is dealt with in EN 12811 1.
NOTE   In the text of this standard, the term "loose spigot" is used instead of the "spigot pin" in the title.

Diese Europäische Norm legt für ebene und profilierte Fußplatten sowie für Zentrierbolzen zur Anwendung in Arbeits  und Traggerüsten aus Rohren mit einem Durchmesser von 48,3 mm fest:
   die Werkstoffe;
   die konstruktiven Anforderungen;
   die Versuchsdurchführungen;
                die Beurteilung.

   matériaux ;
   exigences de conception ;
   modes opératoires d’essai ;
   évaluation.
Les semelles à réglage vertical, désignées « socles réglables », sont traitées dans l’EN 12811-1.
NOTE   Dans le texte de cette norme, le terme « goujon libre » est utilisé à la place de « goujon ».

Overview

EN 74-3:2007 (CEN) - "Couplers, spigot pins and baseplates for use in falsework and scaffolds - Part 3: Plain base plates and spigot pins - Requirements and test procedures" defines requirements and test procedures for plain base plates and loose spigots (spigot pins) intended for use with 48.3 mm diameter scaffold and falsework tubes. The standard covers materials, design requirements, production control, force‑displacement testing and assessment, marking, designation and required product documentation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & terminology
    • Applies to plain and profiled base plates and loose spigots for 48.3 mm tubes. The term “loose spigot” is used in the text instead of “spigot pin”.
  • Materials and corrosion protection
    • Ferrous materials in line with EN 74-1; aluminium alloys permitted.
    • Electrolytic zinc coating type C: average thickness 15 µm.
  • Design requirements
    • Base plate comprises a plate and a centring device; centring device minimum 50 mm length.
    • Maximum radial play of reference tube: 11 mm.
    • Plate symmetry and inscribed circle radius r = 70–80 mm.
    • Minimum flat plate thicknesses deemed acceptable: steel S235 ≥ 5 mm, aluminium alloy with proof stress 195 N/mm² ≥ 7 mm.
    • Loose spigot: collar outer diameter 47.0–47.8 mm, body diameter 35.0–37.5 mm (cruciform up to 38.7 mm), collar/axis concentricity ±1.0 mm, insertion length at least 75 mm into tubes either side of collar.
  • Test procedures (base plates)
    • Minimum 3 tests, samples randomly selected from a batch ≥ 500 (ISO 2859-10).
    • Test arrangement: plate on circular support, force applied centrally to tube.
    • Preload 0.3 kN; increase test load at ≤ 0.1 kN/s; displacement rate ≤ 1.0 mm/min.
    • Stop when load P reaches 30 kN or central deflection f reaches 5 mm. Record force‑displacement curve.
  • Production, marking and documentation
    • Manufacturer drawings, production control, product manual (incl. identification, assessor, usage and damage instructions, declaration of conformity).
    • Marking: “EN 74-3”, manufacturer name/trademark, year (last two digits). Characters ≥ 4.0 mm high, ≥ 0.2 mm deep.
    • Example designation: EN 74-3 BP C (base plate with corrosion protection type C).

Applications and users

  • Practical use: selection, testing and certification of base plates and loose spigots for scaffolding, falsework, temporary works and construction support systems.
  • Primary users: scaffold and falsework manufacturers, temporary works engineers, site safety managers, testing laboratories, conformity assessors, procurement/specifiers and regulatory inspectors.
