Overview

EN ISO 5403-2:2011 (ISO 5403-2:2011) specifies a laboratory method for determining the dynamic water resistance of flexible leather by repeated angular compression - commonly known as the Maeser test. The method is applicable to all flexible leathers and is particularly suited to footwear leathers. Test specimens are folded into V-shaped clamps on a Maeser-type machine, immersed in water (or electrolyte for electronic detection) and flexed until water penetration occurs.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Repeated angular (folding-type) compression of a folded leather specimen until first sign of water penetration; results reported as number of flex cycles.
  • Apparatus: Maeser-type machine with V-shaped clamps set 63 mm ± 3 mm apart; clamp V internal angle 31° ± 1°; internal tip radius 7.5 mm ± 0.5 mm; pivot located 54.0 mm ± 0.5 mm above clamp tip; flexing angle 32° ± 2°; flexing frequency (90 ± 5) cycles/min.
  • Specimens: Two square specimens, at least 100 mm × 100 mm; fold orientation marked relative to principal material direction; edges may be sealed with rubber solution if wicking is a concern.
  • Media: Distilled or deionized water (ISO 3696 grade 3) at (20 ± 5) °C; for electronic detection use 1 g/l NaCl electrolyte.
  • Electronic detection (optional): Uses stainless steel balls (~3 mm) and a high-potential electrode; test is stopped when resistance falls below 50 000 Ω.
  • Pre-treatments: Optional light abrasion (P180 abrasive, weighted to ~1.0 kg) to simulate wear; alternative pre-flexing using ISO 5402-1 may be appropriate for some leathers.
  • Measurements: Count cycles to penetration (continuous observation or electronic stop). Water penetration usually appears at the ends of the centre fold.

Applications and users

  • Footwear manufacturers assessing upper and lining leathers for dynamic water resistance under flexing conditions.
  • Leather testing laboratories performing standardized quality control, batch acceptance and comparative performance assessments.
  • R&D teams developing finishes, coatings or leather constructions that improve flexing water resistance.
  • Procurement and compliance professionals specifying material performance for outdoor, work, or safety footwear.

Related standards and notes

  • Part of the ISO 5403 series; see ISO 5403-1 (repeated linear compression - penetrometer). Results from Part 1 and Part 2 are not comparable due to different flexing actions.
  • Normative references used: ISO 2418 (sampling), ISO 2419 (sample preparation/conditioning), ISO 3696 (water for lab use).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 5403-2 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee
CEN/TC 289, Leather, in collaboration with the Physical Test Commission of the International Union of
Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUP Commission, IULTCS), in accordance with the Agreement
on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a world-wide organization of professional leather societies to further the
advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are responsible for
establishing international methods for the sampling and testing of leather. ISO recognizes IULTCS as an
international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather.
ISO 5403 consists of the following parts, under the general title Leather — Determination of water resistance

1 Scope
This part of ISO 5403 specifies a method for determining the dynamic water resistance of leather by means of
repeated angular compression. It is applicable to all flexible leathers but is particularly suitable for leathers
intended for footwear applications. It uses a Maeser-type machine and includes an option for electronic

3 Principle
A square test specimen is folded and secured in two V-shaped clamps which have closed ends so as to form
a trough. The trough is then immersed in water and the clamp at one end oscillates at a constant speed so
that the specimen is repeatedly flexed. The test is stopped at the first sign of water penetration through the
test specimen or by means of electronic detection.
NOTE This test method uses folding-type flexing, whereas the test method of ISO 5403-1 for water resistance
imparts compression-type flexing on the leather specimens. Given the two completely different flexing actions, it is not
possible to compare the results obtained from the two test methods.
4 Apparatus, reagents and materials
Usual laboratory apparatus is required and, in particular, the following.
4.1 Maeser-type machine, whith one or more pairs of V-shaped clamps, which are set 63 mm  3 mm
apart in the same horizontal plane, into which the test specimen can be clamped.
4.1.1 Each clamp shall have two parts as described in 4.1.1.1 and 4.1.1.2.
4.1.1.1 An outer part comprising a “V” form with an internal angle of 31°  1°, an internal tip radius of
7,5 mm  0,5 mm and a closed back to the “V” which is impermeable to water.

4.1.1.2 An inner part having the shape and size that shall complement the outer part.

4.1.3 One clamp shall pivot about a point X which is midway (31,5 mm  1,5 mm) between the clamps such
that the lower end of the clamps move together (see Figure 1).
