Overview

prEN ISO 17660-1 / ISO/DIS 17660-1:2017 - Welding of reinforcing steel - Part 1: Load‑bearing welded joints provides a technical framework for the design, execution and qualification of load‑bearing welded joints in reinforcing steel used in concrete structures. The draft standard (ISO/DIS 17660-1:2017) was circulated for comment but the CEN working item was later abandoned (notification 2018-06-28) following cancellation of the ISO working item. The draft’s content remains a useful reference for industry stakeholders involved in welding reinforcing bars for structural applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and terminology: Definitions, symbols and abbreviated terms specific to welding reinforcing steel and load‑bearing joints.
  • Welding processes: Detailed reference to applicable welding process numbers (as listed in the draft) and guidance on their use for different joint types.
  • Joint types: Requirements and recommended details for butt joints, lap joints, strap joints, cross joints and joints between reinforcing bars and other steel components.
  • Materials and consumables: High‑level guidance on parent materials (reinforcing steels and other steels) and suitable welding consumables, plus associated inspection documentation.
  • Quality and inspection: Quality requirements, acceptance criteria and recommended examination and testing methods, including tensile and shear testing of test specimens.
  • Personnel and qualification: Requirements for welding coordination, welder and operator qualifications, validity of qualification tests and the scope (range) of qualification.
  • Welding procedure specification (WPS) and procedures: Content for WPS, procedure qualification testing, production weld tests, execution and inspection in production welding.
  • Production and testing: Guidance on production weld tests, execution of welding on bent bars, and specific considerations for different process groups; testing procedures and reporting requirements.

Practical applications

  • Used as a technical reference for specifying and verifying load‑bearing welded joints in reinforced concrete elements (e.g., splices, connections to steel components).
  • Guides development of WPSs, welder/operator qualification programs, production testing and inspection regimes.
  • Supports contractors, structural fabricators, welding coordinators, inspection bodies and designers seeking consistent, verifiable welding practices for reinforcing steel.

Who should use it

  • Structural and civil engineers specifying reinforcement connections
  • Welding coordinators and quality managers in precast and in‑situ concrete construction
  • Fabrication shops, welding contractors and contractors performing reinforcement welding
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies evaluating welds and welder qualifications

Related information and status

  • This document is a draft circulated for comment (ISO/DIS 17660-1:2017) and the CEN WI was abandoned in 2018. Users should verify the current status of ISO 17660 series documents and national standards before referencing them in contractual specifications. DRAFT INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
Welding — Welding of reinforcing steel — Part 1: Load-
bearing welded joints
1 Scope
This part of ISO 17660 is applicable to the welding of weldable reinforcing steel and stainless
reinforcing steel of load-bearing joints, in workshops or on site. It specifies requirements for materials,
design and execution of welded joints, welding personnel, quality requirements, examination and
testing.
This part of ISO 17660 also covers welded joints between reinforcing steel bars and other steel
components, such as connection devices and insertion anchors, including prefabricated assemblies. Non
load-bearing joints are covered by ISO 17660-2.
This part of ISO 17660 is not applicable to factory production of welding fabric and lattice girders using
multiple spot welding machines or multiple projection welding machines.
The requirements of this part of ISO 17660 are only applicable to static loaded structures.
NOTE For fatigue-loaded structures, depending on type of joint and welding process, it is recommended that
an appropriate reduction be taken into account on the fatigue strength of the reinforcing steel.
