EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 4 European foreword This document (EN 15655-1:2018) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 203 “Cast iron pipes, fittings and their joints”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by June 2019, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by June 2019. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. This document supersedes EN 15655:2009. The main changes to EN 15655:2009 are: a) EN 15655 has been split into two parts. This part covers polyurethane lining of pipes and fittings; b) in Clause 3 the definition of “minimum lining thickness” has been revised (3.5); c) in 5.1 the values for the surface roughness have been changed; d) in 5.1 the surface temperature to be maintained above the dew point has been changed; e) in 5.2.2 Tables 1 and 2 for the minimum lining thickness have been revised; f) in 5.6 the technical requirements for the non-porosity have been revised; g) in 5.7 the requirement for the hardness 70 Shore D has been deleted; h) in 6.5 the ambient temperature has been increased; i) in 6.7 a reference to the CEN/TR 16950 “Ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories — Sanitary characteristics and test methods” was added in a NOTE; j) in 7.1.8 the requirements for testing of non-porosity has been revised; k) in Table A.2 the requirements for the routine test of non-porosity (No.1) have been revised; l) the requirements for photoaging have been deleted; m)

EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 5 Introduction This standard is in conformity with the general requirements already established by CEN/TC 164 in the field of water supply (e.g. potable water) and CEN/TC 165 in the field of waste water. In respect of potential adverse effects on the quality of water intended for human consumption, caused by the product covered by this standard: a) No information is provided as to whether the product may be used without restriction in any of the member states of the EU or EFTA; b) It should be noted that, while awaiting the adoption of verifiable European criteria, existing national regulations concerning the use and/or the characteristics of this product remain in force. EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 9 3.12 Polyurethane (PU) Polyurethane, Polyurea and their mixtures 4 Ordering information The following information shall be supplied to the manufacturer by the purchaser. Ductile iron pipes or fittings according to EN 545, EN 598 or EN 969 but internally coated in accordance with this European Standard shall be specified in the purchaser's enquiry and order by reference to this standard, e.g. — 5 000 m of ductile iron pipe DN 300 according to EN 545, internal PU-lining according to EN 15655; or — 10 pieces of ductile iron fittings DN 300 according to EN 598, internal PU-lining according to EN 15655; — further information about use and handling, if needed. 5 Technical requirements 5.1 Surface preparation Prior to application of the polyurethane lining, the surface of the pipes or fittings to be lined shall be clean, free of rust, loose constituent materials, dirt, oil, grease and moisture. In cold weather, or anytime when moisture tends to condense on the surface of the pipe or fitting, it shall be uniformly warmed for sufficient time to dry prior to cleaning. The surface temperature shall be maintained at least 3 °C above the dew point. The surface shall be prepared by grinding and grit blasting for pipes and grit blasting for fittings and be in compliance with level SA 2.5 of ISO 8501-1 when checked according to 7.1.2. The surface roughness Ra in accordance with ISO 8503-1 shall be at least 12,5 µm which is equivalent to an anchored profile Rz of 63 µm or higher if required by the lining material provider or manufacturer. The cleanliness of the surface shall be tested according to EN ISO 8502-3. 5.2 Finished polyurethane lining 5.2.1 Appearance and continuity The polyurethane lining shall be of: — uniform colour, except the spigot end and the internal socket profile which may be of a different colour and different coating material; — uniform appearance and smoothness except for admissible repairs; — free of visible defects (pinholes, bubbles, blisters, wrinkles, cracks or voids). Slight superficial variations of colour or brilliance due to repairs or prolonged exposure to sunlight or contact with other pipes are permissible. 5.2.2 Minimum lining thickness When measured in accordance with 7.1.4, the lining thickness shall be as indicated in Table 1 for water application and in Table 2 for waste water application. For 800

minimum lining thickness the test tension shall be 4 kV. For 1000

minimum lining thickness the test tension shall be 5 kV. The scanning electrode shall be passed over the surface of the lining being inspected with a continuous, relative movement not exceeding 300 mm/s. The electrode shall not be damaged and shall be in constant touch with the lining. For thicker linings, a higher test voltage may be used by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 5.4 Pipe ends Spigot end and internal socket profile (see Figure 1) shall be coated with one of the following: — epoxy lining in accordance with EN 14901; — polyurethane in accordance with this standard with a minimum lining thickness of 150 m; — zinc + bituminous finishing layer according to EN 545; — multilayer, e.g. of epoxy, PUR-Epoxy; — zinc-rich paint and epoxy. The manufacturer shall ensure that the joint can be assembled. The coating thickness shall be checked according to 7.1.5. 5.5 Repairs In case of holidays or damage, repairs shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s written instructions. Repairs shall be checked according to 7.1.6. Fresh surfaces of pipes cut on site shall be protected by appropriate coating materials of PU or Epoxy according to the manufacturer's written instructions. SIST EN 15655-1:2019

EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 11 5.6 Marking All pipes shall be marked legibly and durably according to the pipe standard EN 545, EN 598 or EN 969. Reference to this standard shall be legibly and durably applied by any method upon the external surface. This shall be checked according to 7.1.7. 5.7 Hardness The different applications (drinking water, sewage, etc.) can use different hardnesses which are indicated in the pipe manufacturer's catalogue. They shall be tested in accordance with 7.1.9. 5.8 Adhesion The adhesion shall be at least 8 MPa when tested in accordance with 7.1.10. 6 Performance Requirements 6.1 Chemical resistance The chemical resistance is determined by the change in weight of the polyurethane lining in neutral or acid conditions. When tested in accordance with 7.2.3 the weight increase respectively, weight loss shall meet the requirements given in Table 3 when compared to the original weight. Less than 4 % weight loss 6.2 Indirect Impact strength Due to handling activities, the PU-lined pipes may fall or get impacts from outside with minor plastic deformations which can cause damages on the lining. The minimum impact strength shall be determined in accordance with the test method defined in 7.2.4 with an impact energy E of at least 50 J. The lining shall subsequently show no damage when tested in accordance with 7.1.8. 6.3 Resistance to ovalization The requirements of EN 545 or EN 598 shall apply. SIST EN 15655-1:2019

EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 12 6.4 Elongation at break The elongation at break shall be assessed by testing in accordance with the test method defined in 7.2.6. The lining shall have a minimum elongation at break of 2,5 %. 6.5 Glass transition temperature The lining material shall conform to determined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). 6.6 Specific electrical resistance of the lining The specific lining resistance of the polyurethane lining shall be assessed by testing in accordance with the test method defined in 7.2.7. The specific lining resistance of the polyurethane lining after immersion in a 0,1 M NaCl solution for 100 days shall be at least 108

m2. The resistance after 100 days shall not be less than 80 % of the value after 70 days if the surface resistance of the lining after 100 days is only one decimal power above the minimum permissible value for 100 days. The test shall be carried out at room temperature (23 ± 2) °C. 6.7 Abrasion resistance (only for waste water application) When tested in accordance with 7.2.8, the pipes shall not have an abrasion depth greater than 0,2 mm after 100 000 movements (50 000 cycles). NOTE In order to test the abrasion resistance of fittings, straight fittings as flanged pipes, etc. may be lined as fittings and tested according to 7.2.7. 6.8 Materials in contact with water intended for human consumption When used under the conditions for which they are designed, in permanent or in temporary contact with water intended for human consumption, the polyurethane lining applied on ductile iron pipes and fittings shall not change the quality of that water to such an extent that it fails to comply with the requirements of national regulations. For this purpose, reference shall be made to the relevant national regulations and standards, transposing EN standards when available, dealing with the influence of materials on water quality and to the requirements for external systems and components as given in EN 805. NOTE A guidance on existing national regulations is given in CEN/TR 16950 7 Test Methods 7.1 Routine tests 7.1.1 General The following routine tests shall be carried out to control the lining production process in order to obtain a lining of high and stable quality. 7.1.2 Surface preparation The blasted surface of the pipes and fittings shall be checked visually for compliance with preparation grade Sa 2-2.5 of ISO 8501-1. The surface roughness Ra shall be checked in accordance with ISO 8503-1. SIST EN 15655-1:2019

EN 15655-1:2018 (E) 13 7.1.3 Appearance and continuity The appearance of the finished lining shall be checked visually. 7.1.4 Lining thickness The thickness of the lining shall be measured with non-destructive instruments (e.g. based on magnetic or electro-magnetic principles) which have a measuring accuracy of ± 2 %. A minimum of 10 measurements evenly distributed over the circumference at each end of the pipe (between 100 mm and 300 mm after the spigot end and socket end) shall be carried out prior to the determination of the minimum value. 7.1.5 Pipe ends The appearance of the coated pipe ends are checked visually and the coated length (Figure 1) is measured with appropriate metering gauge.
