(Main)Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of shear behaviour
Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of shear behaviour
This European Standard specifies the equipment and procedures for determining shear behaviour. It is applicable to thermal insulating products.
NOTE The tests described in this standard do not determine pure shear behaviour, but measure the effects of applying two opposite parallel forces to the major faces of the test specimen. The test is however called shear in this text by convention. The application of a force tangentially to the major surface of the test specimen is considered to represent more closely the stresses imposed upon thermal insulation products in many building applications, particularly walls, than other methods of measuring shear performance e.g. bending tests.

Overview
EN 12090:2013 - published by CEN - defines a standardized laboratory method for determining the shear behaviour of thermal insulating products used in building applications. The standard describes the equipment, specimen preparation, test procedures and calculation of results for shear strength and shear modulus. Note: the test applies two opposite parallel forces to the specimen faces and therefore measures practical shear behaviour rather than an idealized pure-shear state.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: apply tangential (longitudinal shear) forces through rigid supports bonded to the specimen and record force–displacement behavior.
- Test machine: constant movement of the movable head at (3 ± 0.5) mm/min, force and displacement measurement with maximum error 1 %. Displacement transducers may be required when adhesive layers are thick.
- Specimen arrangements:
- Single specimen: square specimen 250 mm × 50 mm, thickness = product thickness (max 50 mm).
- Double specimen: two square parts 200 mm × 100 mm each, assembled per the standard.
- Specimen supports and fixtures: rigid metal plates (examples: 330 mm × 50 mm, 16 mm thick) and arrangements ensuring parallelism and rigidity to avoid test artefacts.
- Adhesive: adhesive film must have shear strength and modulus greater than the product so failure occurs in the specimen, not the bond.
- Specimen preparation & dimensions: retain coatings/facings; flatness/parallelism tolerance ≤ 0.5 % of thickness (max 0.5 mm). Dimensional measurement per EN 12085.
- Conditioning and test conditions: store specimens ≥ 6 h at (23 ± 5) °C (dispute condition: 23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5 % RH). Test normally at (23 ± 5) °C.
- Number of specimens: follow the relevant product standard; if absent, at least five specimens.
- Results: calculate shear strength (τ) and shear modulus (G) from measured force–displacement curves.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of thermal insulation (mineral wool, rigid foam boards, composite panels) use EN 12090:2013 for product development, quality control and to support performance claims.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies perform reproducible shear tests for compliance, CE marking and technical approvals.
- Specifiers, engineers and consultants assessing insulation performance in wall assemblies where tangential stresses (sliding, layering, adhesive joints) are critical.
- Regulatory authorities and standards committees referencing a harmonized method for comparative data across products.

The EN 12090:2013 standard provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the shear behaviour of thermal insulating products used in building applications. This standard is crucial for manufacturers and engineers as it details the specific equipment and procedures necessary to accurately determine the shear performance of these materials, which are essential for ensuring structural integrity and energy efficiency in buildings. One of the key strengths of EN 12090:2013 is its approach to mimic real-world conditions through testing. Unlike traditional methods such as bending tests, which may not fully represent the operational stresses that thermal insulation products experience in practical situations, this standard focuses on applying two opposite parallel forces. This operational methodology provides a clearer understanding of how these materials behave under shear stress, thereby ensuring that results are more applicable to actual building scenarios, particularly in walls. Moreover, the relevance of this standard extends beyond mere compliance; it facilitates better product development and innovation within the thermal insulation sector. By adhering to EN 12090:2013, manufacturers can enhance their product designs, leading to improved performance characteristics and safety when used in construction. Consequently, this standard also aids in promoting energy efficiency, contributing to the sustainability goals within the building industry. In summary, the EN 12090:2013 standard serves as a vital tool for the evaluation of shear behaviour in thermal insulating products, offering robust testing methodologies that align more closely with real-world applications than traditional methods. Its strengths lie in its practical testing approach, which not only ensures compliance but also supports advancements in material performance and building safety.
