Overview

EN 1018:2021 - published by CEN - is the European standard for calcium carbonate used as a chemical for the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The document describes identification, physical and chemical properties, purity criteria, required test methods, labelling, transport and storage considerations, and practical information on the use of calcium carbonate in drinking‑water treatment. It supersedes EN 1018:2013+A1:2015 and is intended for adoption by CEN member bodies.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and identification
    • Covers both natural (limestone) and chemically produced calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Includes CAS and EINECS references.
    • Physical properties provided (appearance, density, solubility, particle size ranges).
  • Classification
    • Distinguishes non‑porous and porous calcium carbonate and defines classes/grades based on CaCO3 content and total carbonate content.
    • Composition classes specify minimum CaCO3 mass fractions for different grades (e.g., Class 1 / Class 2 / Class 3).
  • Purity and impurities
    • Limits for residues insoluble in HCl, and for trace elements (antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium) are provided; two limit sets (Type A / Type B).
  • Test methods and sampling
    • Refers to EN 12485 for analytical procedures and to ISO 3165, ISO 6206 for sampling; ISO 9277 (BET) referenced for specific surface area measurement.
  • Labelling, transport and storage
    • Product marking and accompanying documentation requirements (product name, class/grade/type, net mass, supplier).
    • Calcium carbonate is not classified as dangerous goods; users must be aware of incompatibilities (e.g., keep away from acids).
    • Long‑term stability: stable if kept dry.

Applications and practical use

  • Used to adjust pH and hardness, and to remineralise desalinated water (often with CO2) in drinking‑water treatment processes.
  • Available in crushed/granular forms, slurries or blends to suit dosing and process requirements.
  • Practical for water utilities, municipal and industrial water treatment plants, and for laboratories specifying or verifying dosing chemicals.

Who should use this standard

  • Water utilities and plant operators specifying treatment chemicals
  • Chemical manufacturers and suppliers of calcium carbonate
  • Testing laboratories performing compliance analyses
  • Regulatory bodies, consultants and procurement teams assessing material suitability for drinking‑water applications

Related standards

  • EN 12485 (test methods for calcium carbonate and related products)
  • ISO 3165, ISO 6206 (sampling standards)
  • ISO 9277 (BET surface area determination)

Note: Conformity with EN 1018:2021 does not automatically imply national regulatory acceptance; users should check local drinking‑water regulations and authority requirements. Keywords: EN 1018:2021, calcium carbonate standard, water treatment chemicals, drinking water, purity criteria, test methods, CEN.
