ISO 17262:2012 defines generic numbering and data structures for unambiguous identification of equipment used for Intermodal goods transport. These data are known as "Intermodal Goods Transport Numbering and Data Structures".
It defines data independently of the data carrier. The modelling of data is based on Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) as defined in ISO/IEC 8824. It excludes any physical aspects such as interfaces, dimensions, etc. Data that form part of transmission or storage protocols (headers, frame markers and checksums) are excluded.
Data defined in ISO 17262:2012 require a system for control and distribution of number series independent of the different AVI/AEI systems. This is required in order to avoid ambiguity and to provide the necessary level of security where appropriate. For this reason the registration authority defined in ISO 14816 applies for ISO 17262:2012.
ISO 17262:2012 enables the use of optimised encoding schemes such as ASN.1 Packed Encoding Rules (PER).

L'ISO 17262:2012 définit les structures génériques de numérotation et de données pour l'identification exclusive des équipements utilisés pour le transport intermodal de marchandises. Ces données sont connues sous la dénomination «structures des données et numérotation pour le transport intermodal des marchandises».
L'ISO 17262:2012 définit les données indépendamment du support des données. La modélisation des données s'appuie sur la notation de syntaxe abstraite numéro un (ASN.1) telle que définie dans l'ISO/CEI 8824. L'ISO 17262:2012 exclut tout aspect physique tel que les interfaces, les dimensions, etc. Les données qui font partie de protocoles de transmission ou de stockage (en-têtes, marqueurs de trame et sommes de contrôle) sont exclues.

Ta mednarodni standard opredeljuje generične strukture oštevilčenja in podatkov za jasno identifikacijo opreme, uporabljene za intermodalni prevoz blaga. Ti podatki so znani kot »Strukture oštevilčenja in podatkov pri intermodalnem prevozu blaga«. Ta mednarodni standard opredeljuje podatke neodvisno od nosilca podatkov. Specifikacije za zaščito pred spremembami, razvrščanje in kvalifikacija varnostnih vidikov podatkov so zunaj obsega tega mednarodnega standarda. Ta mednarodni standard je povezan z enotami AVI/AEI, vendar ne z manjšimi kontejnerji in enotami, ki se prevažajo. Za manjše enote (blago na paletah, vozičke, pakete itd.) glejte standarda ISO 26683 in ISO/IEC SC31, serijo ISO 18000 itd. This document (EN ISO 17262:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 278 “Road
transport and traffic telematics”, the secretariat of which is held by NEN, in collaboration with Technical
Committee ISO/TC 204 "Intelligent transport systems".
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by March 2013, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at
the latest by March 2013.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes CEN ISO/TS 17262:2003.
