Petroleum products and related products - Determination of kinematic viscosity - Method by Stabinger type viscosimeter

This European Standard specifies a procedure for the determination of kinematic viscosity (ν) in the range from 2 mm2/s to 6 mm2/s at 40°C by calculation from dynamic viscosity (η) and density (ρ) of middle distillate fuels, fatty acid methyl ester fuels (FAME) and mixtures of these using the Stabinger-type viscosimeter.
The result obtained using the procedure described in this standard depends on the behaviour of the sample. This European Standard should be used predominantly on liquids whose shear stress and shear rate are proportional (Newtonian flow behaviour). However, if the viscosity changes significantly with the shear rate, comparison with other measuring methods is only permissible at similar shear rates.
WARNING - The use of this Standard can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and health of personnel prior to the application of the Standard, and fulfil statutory and regulatory requirements for this purpose.

fin.

Overview

EN 16896:2016 is a CEN European Standard for determining kinematic viscosity (ν) of petroleum and related liquid fuels using a Stabinger‑type viscosimeter. It specifies a procedure to calculate kinematic viscosity from measured dynamic viscosity (η) and density (ρ) at 40 °C in the range 2 mm2/s to 6 mm2/s. The standard is intended for middle distillate fuels, fatty acid methyl ester fuels (FAME) and their mixtures, and emphasizes use on liquids with Newtonian flow behaviour. EN 16896:2016 also includes requirements for sampling, apparatus preparation, calibration and result expression.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Measurement principle: dynamic viscosity is measured by a Stabinger‑type concentric rotating rotor system (inner rotor speed vs. eddy‑current brake); density is measured by an integrated oscillating U‑tube. Kinematic viscosity is calculated as η / ρ.
  • Temperature control: measurements at 40.00 °C with cell block stability typically ±0.005 °C; temperature sensor uncertainty requirement ±0.03 °C.
  • Measurement stability: instrument checks for equilibration and limits fluctuations to ±0.07% for dynamic viscosity and ±0.03 kg/m3 for density within 60 s.
  • Measuring range: designed for kinematic viscosity values from 2 to 6 mm2/s at 40 °C.
  • Fluid behaviour: predominantly for Newtonian fluids; if viscosity varies significantly with shear rate, comparisons are only valid at similar shear rates.
  • Calibration & verification:
    • Use certified reference liquids for viscosity and density (EN ISO 3104, EN ISO 12185 referenced).
    • Recommended verification intervals: viscosity & density monthly, temperature yearly.
    • Acceptable deviations for verification: viscosity adjustment if >0.35% from reference; density if >0.001 g/cm3; temperature if >0.03 °C.
  • Sampling & handling: follow EN ISO 3170 / EN ISO 3171 and pre‑heat waxy samples to dissolve crystals.
  • Safety note: standard warns of hazardous materials and requires appropriate safety measures and compliance with statutory regulations.
