Surfaces for sports areas - Determination of resistance to impact
This document specifies a method for the determination of resistance to impact of sports floor systems. It is primarily designed to be used on surfaces intended for use in indoor sports halls. The test can be undertaken in the laboratory or on site.
When undertaking tests on site, it is important to note that permanent damage to the sports floor can be caused.

Overview
EN 1517:2020 - published by CEN - specifies a method to determine the resistance to impact of sports floor systems. It is intended primarily for indoor sports halls and can be applied in the laboratory or on-site. The standard defines test apparatus, specimen preparation, conditioning, test procedure, assessment criteria and reporting requirements. Note: on-site tests can cause permanent damage to the floor surface.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Test method for impact resistance of sports surfaces and complete floor constructions used in indoor sports facilities (ICS 97.220.10).
- Apparatus:
- Cylindrical indenter: diameter (11.3 ± 0.3) mm, flat contact surface with edge radius (1.25 ± 0.1) mm, mass (800 ± 10) g.
- Drop mechanism: vertical guide tube allowing friction-free drop from (1 ± 0.01) m.
- Pocket-lens / microscope (×4) and dial gauge for measurements.
- Thermometer capable of recording surface temperature to 0.5 °C.
- Specimen: Minimum size 300 mm × 300 mm combined with the supporting layers intended for service; larger specimens may be required for dynamic or area-elastic constructions.
- Conditioning:
- Default: minimum 3 h at (10 ± 1) °C.
- For humidity-sensitive materials: minimum 88 h at (50 ± 5) % RH at the test temperature.
- Tests should be carried out while specimen remains within 1 °C of the conditioning temperature.
- Procedure:
- Record surface temperature before each test.
- Release indenter without shock; perform at least five impacts, spaced ≥5 cm apart and ≥5 cm from edges.
- Immediately inspect for cracking, delamination, or permanent indentation without mechanically deforming the sample.
- Measure indentation depth to 0.1 mm accuracy 24 ± 1 h after impact.
- If visual damage is detected, cut through the impact point and examine depth with ×4 magnification.
- On-site visual assessment: from a minimum distance of 50 cm, without instruments or deformation.
- Reporting: Report must reference EN 1517:2020 and include surface identification, test temperature, results per Clause 7, and photographic evidence of any damage.
Applications and users
- Useful for: sports flooring manufacturers, test laboratories, facility managers, architects, specifiers and contractors involved in indoor sports halls.
- Practical uses: product development, quality control, acceptance testing on delivery/installation, forensic assessment after incidents or warranty disputes.
