Rubber materials for seals and diaphragms for gas appliances and gas equipment

This document specifies requirements and associated test methods for rubber materials used in gas installations, gas equipment and gas appliances in contact with 1st, 2nd and 3rd family combustible gases as classified in EN 437:2018, additionally LPG, bio methane and bio LPG, in the same quality, are covered. It also establishes a classification based on temperature range and hardness. This document is applicable to materials from which homogeneous seals and homogeneous or reinforced diaphragms are manufactured.
Since the dimensions and shape of the components differ from those of standard test pieces taken from sheet material as used for type testing of the rubber materials according to this document, tolerances have been made in the requirements specified by Annex A for the components with respect to those specified for standard test pieces.
The range of operating temperatures covered by this document is –40 °C to +150 °C.
For applications with potential condensation, this document is not applicable for silicon rubber, e.g. above 200 hPa (200 mbar) nominal pressure or at temperatures below 0 °C with 3rd family gases.

Overview

EN 549:2019/prA1 - Rubber materials for seals and diaphragms for gas appliances and gas equipment (CEN) specifies material requirements and test methods for rubber used in gas installations, appliances and equipment that contact combustible gases (1st, 2nd and 3rd family per EN 437:2018), plus LPG, biomethane and bio‑LPG. It covers homogeneous seals and homogeneous or reinforced diaphragms over an operating temperature range of −40 °C to +150 °C, and includes special tolerances for finished components (Annex A). The amendment (prA1) adds voluntary tests for volume change and stress relaxation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Material scope: Homogeneous seals and homogeneous/reinforced diaphragms for gas applications (1st–3rd family gases, LPG, biomethane, bio‑LPG).
  • Temperature range: −40 °C to +150 °C.
  • Hardness classification: Three hardness classes (H1, H2, H3) with hardness tolerance ±5 IRHD.
  • Mechanical properties:
    • Tensile strength: H1 ≥ 5 MPa; H2/H3 ≥ 7 MPa.
    • Elongation at break: ≥ 125% for all classes.
    • Compression set: ≤ 40% (with specified high/low temperature limits).
  • Ageing and chemical resistance:
    • Limits on change in hardness, tensile strength and elongation after ageing.
    • Resistance to gas: limits on change in mass after immersion/drying (e.g. +10% / −5% for immersion/drying mass change as specified).
    • Resistance to condensate/liquid phase of combustible gases: higher allowed mass change (e.g. immersion up to +20%); applicable only if declared resistant.
  • Additional voluntary tests (prA1):
    • Stress relaxation in compression (ISO 3384 Method A; measurements to 90 days; example 90 d limits: H1 21%, H2 18%, H3 21%).
    • Change of volume after gas and condensate exposure (procedures defined in modified test clauses).
  • Silicone note: For applications with potential condensation, the standard is not applicable to silicone rubber in certain conditions (e.g. above 200 hPa or below 0 °C with 3rd family gases). Silicone has special exceptions for mass/hardness change.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of rubber seals and diaphragms for domestic and industrial gas appliances.
  • OEMs, gas‑equipment designers and materials engineers specifying sealing materials for gas installations.
  • Test laboratories performing material qualification, type testing and component testing (see Annex A tolerances for finished parts).
  • Regulatory bodies, procurement and quality assurance teams that require compliance with European gas safety standards.
