Overview
EN 1869:2019 - published by CEN - specifies requirements for non-reusable fire blankets intended for single-person use. The standard defines construction, performance, fire tests, electrical safety, marking, packaging and minimum test-report content for fire blankets designed to control small fires and, when large enough, to smother persons whose clothes are on fire. EN 1869:2019 supersedes EN 1869:1997.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Covers single-use (non-reusable) fire blankets for small fire control and for smothering persons when of sufficient size.
- Sizes: Blankets must be rectangular/square with edges between 1.0 m and 1.8 m. Blankets of at least 1.2 m × 1.8 m are considered suitable to smother clothing fires on persons.
- Mass limit: Total mass (without container) must not exceed 4.5 kg.
- Construction:
- Made of one or more sheets; seams limited to edges, layer joins, or hand-holder fixes.
- Hand-holding devices must not be loops, must be self-extinguishing after a brief flame exposure, and must remain attached during tests.
- Edges must not fray or tear during testing.
- Packaging & container:
- Blankets must be packed in a protective container that indicates whether the blanket is present (e.g., visible hand-holding device).
- Container must not damage the blanket and must include folding/inspection guidance.
- Performance & deployment:
- Blanket must be rollable around a 50 mm bar without permanent deformation.
- Removal force from container ≤ 80 N; it must be possible to remove, unfold and hold ready in ≤ 4 s.
- Electrical safety: Material electrical resistance ≥ 1 MΩ (measured per Annex B) to limit electric shock risk if used on live equipment.
- Fire testing:
- Mandatory tests include a cooking oil fire test (uses rapeseed oil, auto-ignition 340–380 °C) and a heptane fire test (Annexes C and D).
- Blankets must extinguish these fires, remain whole and not ignite; tests are video-recorded and performed on the smallest and largest sizes.
- Marking & instructions:
- Blanket and container must be indelibly marked with manufacturer, EN number, model/type, size, batch number.
- Container must show “FIRE BLANKET” (white on red, letters ≥ 20 mm), pictograms and instructions including “SWITCH OFF HEAT”, “COVER BURNING MATERIAL COMPLETELY”, “LEAVE COVERED UNTIL COOL”, and “DISCARD AFTER USE”.
Applications & users
- Relevant to: fire blanket manufacturers, testing laboratories, procurement officers, safety managers in kitchens, laboratories, small workshops, healthcare and education facilities, and regulatory authorities.
- Practical use: selection and certification of non-reusable fire blankets for initial-stage small fire suppression (cooking oil, flammable liquid spills) and personal protection for clothing fires.
- Helps ensure reliable deployment, electrical safety, traceability and clear user instructions.
