Overview

EN 17829:2023 - Glass packaging: 28 millimetre screw finishes (MCA range) - Dimensions - is the CEN standard that consolidates and replaces earlier MCA finish standards. It defines the dimensional specifications for 28 mm screw finishes used on glass containers (MCA series) intended for pressurised or vacuum liquids with metal or plastic closures. The document harmonises finish geometry across MCA types (MCA 1, MCA 2, MCA 3, MCA 7,5 R and MCA 7,5 RF) to ensure closure compatibility, sealing performance and manufacturability.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Dimensional requirements: Specifies main finish dimensions (height F, neck/under-bead diameter N, thread height H, thread diameter T, locking bead L, entry bore C). The standard sets a minimum through bore of 16 mm and explains the chosen F dimension (14.20 mm).
  • Thread profiles and pitches: Defines the distinct thread profiles for each MCA type (flat, round, round-flat variations) and the associated pitch/helix parameters. Start-of-thread and run-out geometry are illustrated to ensure consistent sealing and capping performance.
  • Capping head clearance: Gives capping head clearance limits and construction details under the crimping bead to ensure reliable application of closures.
  • Entry bore constructions: Provides alternative entry-bore constructions to suit different glass moulding practices.
  • Illustrative figures and tables: Includes dimensional drawings, tables of type-specific values and formulae (e.g., helix angle calculation) to allow designers to implement accurate mould and closure tooling.
  • Compatibility notes: Highlights differences between returnable and one-way versions (e.g., typical neck diameters) and advises fillers to verify finish–cap compatibility.

Practical applications

  • Ensures consistent interchangeability between glass bottles and 28 mm closures across Europe.
  • Guides design and tooling for:
    • Glass bottle mould designers and manufacturers
    • Cap and closure manufacturers (metal and plastic)
    • Fillers and packagers verifying closure performance (pressure, vacuum, tamper-evidence)
    • Quality engineers and laboratories performing dimensional inspections
  • Supports market development for both one‑way (single trip) and returnable glass systems where reliable sealing and repeated use are required.

Who uses this standard

  • Glass container designers and OEMs
  • Closure and cap manufacturers
  • Packaging engineers and fillers in beverage and liquid food industries
  • Mouldmakers and capping equipment suppliers
  • National standards bodies and conformity assessors

Introduction
MCA is the designation for the agreement regarding a common finish specification between the
companies Metal Closures Limited in Great Britain and Alcoa in the USA which are at the origin of these
finishes. Originally, these finishes were used on “one way” (single trip) bottles with aluminium closures.
The advent of the returnable market in Europe made it necessary to redesign the neck finish to overcome
shortcomings in thread and sealing performance. The main differences between the finishes are
concerning the thread profile and its pitch.
Historically, the development of the MCAs is partially explained by the differences presented below:
— MCA 1: “flat” under-thread profile, well adapted to the plastic closures;
— MCA 2: round thread profile, more robust and hence better adapted to returnable bot
