Overview

EN 3525:2023 specifies requirements for aerospace-grade steel 15CrMoV6 (W.nr 1.7334, ASD‑STAN designation FE‑PL1505) in plate form. Published by CEN/ASD‑STAN in December 2023 (superseding EN 3525:2007), the standard covers air‑melted, hardened and tempered plates with thicknesses 6 mm ≤ a ≤ 20 mm and tensile strength 1 080 MPa ≤ Rm ≤ 1 280 MPa. It defines chemical composition, heat treatment, mechanical properties, inspection and qualification rules intended for aerospace applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Material designation: Steel 15CrMoV6 (1.7334), Fe base.
  • Chemical composition (typical limits):
    • Carbon (C): 0.12–0.18 %
    • Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.20 %
    • Manganese (Mn): 0.80–1.10 %
    • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.020 %
    • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.015 %
    • Chromium (Cr): 1.25–1.50 %
    • Molybdenum (Mo): 0.80–1.00 %
    • Nickel (Ni): 0.20–0.30 %
  • Heat treatment: Austenitizing at 955 °C to 995 °C (OQ or AC) and tempering at 595 °C to 645 °C (AC) - delivery condition codes A (softened) or U (hardened and tempered).
  • Mechanical properties and testing:
    • Tensile strength Rm: 1 080–1 280 MPa
    • Proof (0.2 % offset) Rp0.2: ≥ 930 MPa
    • Elongation A: ≥ 10 %
    • Hardness: approx. 335–382 HV (321–380 HB) in the hardened condition
    • Test direction: longitudinal/transverse as specified (LT)
    • Test temperature: ambient
  • Inspection and quality: Visual testing for external imperfections; ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal imperfections (Class 2). Cleanliness/inclusion per EN 2951; decarburization and dimensional/marking inspections per EN 4700‑001.
  • Product qualification: Conformity and qualification testing per EN 2043; qualification program to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.

Applications and users

EN 3525:2023 is intended for procurement, design, manufacturing and quality assurance of high‑strength aerospace steel plates. Typical users include:

  • Aerospace material engineers and specifiers
  • Structural designers and manufacturers of aircraft components
  • Metallurgists and heat‑treat shops
  • Quality, inspection and procurement teams in the aviation supply chain

The standard helps ensure consistent chemical, mechanical and inspection performance for plate material selected for demanding aerospace structural applications.
