Overview

EN 15355:2019/FprA1 (CEN) addresses distributor valves and distributor‑isolating devices used in railway braking systems. The amendment clarifies scope and testing requirements for graduable‑release distributor valves (direct release types are excluded) and for distributor‑isolating devices whether mounted separately or integral with the distributor valve. The standard specifies requirements for design, testing and quality assurance and applies to systems mounted in vehicles with a maximum length of 31 m and a maximum brake pipe volume of 25 L, considering brake pipe inner diameters between 25 mm and 32 mm.

Key Topics

  • Scope and exclusions: Only graduable‑release distributor valves are covered; direct release types are explicitly excluded. Devices are functionally regarded as not containing relay valves even if relay valves are physically integral.
  • Design and QA requirements: Clauses address design verification, type testing and quality assurance processes required for compliance.
  • Test conditions and pass/fail criteria: The amendment refines test pressures and timing tolerances for emergency braking. It introduces proportional rescaling for output pressures and build‑up/release times where output is controlled by control chamber pressure.
  • Specified performance figures: The amendment retains a maximum emergency output pressure of (3,80 ± 0,10) bar and revises build‑up and release time ranges by brake mode: G and P values are updated (for example, G build‑up (24,0 ± 6,0) s; P build‑up (4,0 ± 1,0) s; G release (52,5 ± 7,5) s; P release (17,5 ± 2,5) s). Table values for emergency braking at nominal input pressures are also provided in the amendment.
  • Operational details: For distributor valves designed for dual‑pipe applications where the auxiliary reservoir is supplied only from the main reservoir pipe (MRP), tests are to be carried out with the MRP supply at (10,00 ± 0,50) bar.
  • Human interface: Annex D defines mandatory handle shapes for manual release functions (round, oval and an identified handle for automatic manual release with an embossed or engraved "autom" plate).
  • Regulatory linkage: References updated to Directive (EU) 2016/797 and Annex ZA links the standard to relevant TSI clauses for interoperability.

Applications

This standard is intended for:

  • Manufacturers of distributor valves and distributor‑isolating devices for rolling stock
  • Railway systems engineers responsible for brake system design and verification
  • Test laboratories performing type and production tests for brake control components

Practical benefits include clearer test requirements, harmonised QA expectations, and defined human‑interface features to support safe operation and interoperability within EU rail systems.

Related Standards

  • Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI) references as listed in Annex ZA (relating to Directive (EU) 2016/797)
  • Other EN standards on braking subsystems and environmental conditions may apply depending on vehicle type and system integration

For procurement, compliance and conformity assessment, use EN 15355:2019/prA1 as the reference document and consult national standards bodies for the adopted national version and Official Journal citations.

For distributor valves for which output pressure is controlled by the control chamber pressure (i.e;
proportional to the input pressure), the pass/fail criteria shall be in accordance with those of the referred
tests except for the maximum output pressure and build-up and release times. A proportional rescaling
related to the nominal working pressure shall be applied to the
