bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the

Introduction
This document concerns mobile booths for simultaneous interpreting. Mobile booths are designed to be
temporarily set up and used in a variety of locations not equipped for the hosting of multilingual events, for
the duration of the event. This document also describes their installation and use with a direct view of the
room in which the communicative event takes place.
There are a number of things to be taken into account when designing and installing mobile booths.
Interpreting is an activity that requires high levels of concentration, therefore the working environment has
to meet the highest standards to minimize stress.
This document addresses the following:
a) workplace setting of spoken language interpreters;
b) visual communication between interpreters and participants at an event;
c) sound insulation from the noise transmitted from the booth’s environment to a booth;
d) dimensions, mass and handling.

The EN ISO 17651-2:2024 standard provides comprehensive requirements and recommendations for the design, use, and siting of mobile booths utilized in simultaneous interpreting. Its scope underscores the importance of ensuring that mobile interpreting environments are fit for purpose, focusing on flexibility and accessibility. The primary advantage of mobile booths, as indicated in the standard, is their ability to be dismantled, relocated, and set up in varying venues, making them exceptionally versatile for interpreting in diverse contexts. One of the standard's key strengths is its emphasis on the usability and accessibility of mobile booths for all interpreters. This aspect is particularly crucial, as it addresses the different needs of users, ensuring that all interpreters can work optimally regardless of their physical capabilities or the specific demands of their interpreting assignments. By setting clear guidelines for the siting of these booths, the standard aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of simultaneous interpreting. It also highlights the necessity of referring to ISO 20109, which outlines the equipment necessary for such interpreting tasks, linking the two standards and ensuring a holistic approach to interpreter working conditions. Furthermore, the inclusion of cross-references, such as the forthcoming ISO 17651-3, positions EN ISO 17651-2:2024 as a foundational document that encourages continuous improvement in interpreting standards. This interconnectedness reinforces the relevance of the standard within the broader framework of simultaneous interpreting practices. In conclusion, EN ISO 17651-2:2024 significantly contributes to the field of simultaneous interpreting by providing clear, practical, and accessible guidelines tailored to mobile booth environments, ensuring that interpreters can perform effectively in various settings. Its focus on usability and flexibility positions it as a vital resource for practitioners in the industry.
