Overview

EN ISO 16282:2008 (ISO 16282:2007) specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine the abrasion resistance of dense shaped refractory products at ambient temperature. Intended primarily for shaped refractories (and applicable to unshaped materials), the test provides a quantitative indication of a material’s suitability for service in abrasive or erosive conditions. This European adoption by CEN supersedes EN 993‑20:2004 and aligns with international practice for refractory quality assessment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: measure the volume of material abraded from a flat face of a test piece by blasting a controlled mass of abrasive through a nozzle onto the surface.
  • Abrasive and feed: 1 000 g of size‑graded silicon carbide (FEPA P36 equivalent) is fed to the blast assembly in (450 ± 15) s; sieve distribution and pre‑treatment are specified.
  • Blast conditions: compressed air at ~450 kPa drives the abrasive through a venturi blast assembly or blast gun; secondary air and feed mechanism control are required.
  • Geometry and positioning: the nozzle‑to‑specimen distance is (203 ± 1) mm; a glass nozzle and stabilizing sleeve arrangement is specified to ensure repeatability.
  • Specimens: typical specimen sizes are 114 × 114 × 64 mm (standard) and 100 × 100 × 25 mm for highly abrasion‑resistant materials; one flat original surface is used.
  • Measurements and calculations: specimens are dried to constant mass, weighed (±0.1 g), and volume loss is calculated from mass loss and density (bulk density/apparent porosity per ISO 5017 where relevant).
  • Ancillary requirements: manometer and vacuum gauges for chamber and feed checks, balance, callipers, and ISO‑compliant sieves (ISO 565).
  • Documentation: the standard includes precision guidance and a required test report format.

Applications and users

Who uses EN ISO 16282:2008:

  • Refractory manufacturers for quality control, batch acceptance and product development.
  • Materials engineers and R&D teams comparing abrasion performance of formulations.
  • Industrial end‑users (steel, cement, glass, power plants, foundries) for service selection and lifecycle assessment of linings exposed to abrasive solids or erosive flows.
  • Third‑party testing laboratories performing standardized comparative tests for procurement specifications.

Practical uses:

  • Rank and select refractory grades for abrasive/erosive service.
  • Verify supplier claims and support warranty or acceptance testing.
  • Guide formulation changes to improve wear life.

Related standards

  • ISO 565 - Test sieves (sieve sizing for abrasive).

ISO 16282:2007(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
