Overview

EN 12674-2:2001 - Roll containers: Part 2 - General design and safety principles is a CEN European standard that defines the core design, dimensional and safety principles for roll containers and dollies. It applies to the four main roll‑container styles (Demountable, Folding, Nesting and Rigid) and the seven derived forms referenced in EN 12674-1:1999 (Terminology), irrespective of materials. The standard is aimed at ensuring safe, interoperable equipment for manual and pallet‑truck assisted goods movement (it explicitly excludes specialised forklift/reach‑truck applications).

Key topics and technical requirements

EN 12674-2 sets out essential, normative guidance on the following technical subjects:

  • Scope and applicability

    • Four main styles plus derived forms; includes dollies (side‑frame or post fitment).
    • Not applicable to purpose‑built roll containers used with forklifts/reach trucks.
  • Dimensional definitions

    • Plan dimensions: designation of length/width relative to direction of motion.
    • External plan dimensions and internal plan dimensions (useful load area, clearances).
    • Heights: external height, contained height, folded height and operational height.
  • Clearance for mechanised handling

    • Wheel clearance between castors (unrestricted and favourable positions).
    • Vertical clearance (Cv) under base for forks/platforms and horizontal handling clearance (Ch).
  • Marking and information

    • Manufacturer marking: producer identity, month/year, style/form, and references to Parts 3 & 4 where relevant.
    • User marking: owner identity, maximum safe working load (SWL) and reference to safety/operational procedures.
    • Optional markings/fittings: destination plate, document holder, number of shelves, security device instructions.
  • Safety guidance (Annex A, informative)

    • Design/manufacturing safety factors: SWL considerations, material quality, weld quality, avoidance of sharp edges, inset handholds, secure fail‑safe fittings, noise minimisation.
    • User responsibilities: specification of payloads and environment, inspection and maintenance, operator training (loading, handling, PPE, assembly/disassembly).

Applications and who uses it

EN 12674-2 is used by:

  • Manufacturers and designers of roll containers and dollies to define compliant dimensions, clearances and markings.
  • Logistics, retail and warehouse operators to select appropriate container styles and establish safe operating limits and procedures.
  • Procurement and safety managers to specify equipment compatible with pallet trucks, doors, lifts and handling routes.
  • Standards writers and test houses as the normative basis for Parts 3 (test methods) and 4 (performance requirements).

Practical uses include product design verification, supplier specifications, ergonomics and safety training content, and facility planning for mechanised handling.

The EN 12674-2:2001 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the general design and safety principles of roll containers, significantly enhancing the functionality and safety of these essential logistical tools. The standard encompasses four primary styles of roll containers-Demountable, Folding, Nesting, and Rigid-along with seven derived forms as outlined in the previous document, EN 12674-1:1999. This breadth of coverage ensures that manufacturers and users have a clear understanding of the diverse design options available within the industry. One of the strengths of this standard lies in its detailed approach to safety principles, which are critical in reducing the risks associated with the handling and transport of goods. Since roll containers are widely utilized in various sectors, the safety guidelines laid out in EN 12674-2:2001 help mitigate potential hazards, enhancing overall workplace safety and efficiency. Additionally, by specifying requirements that apply to all materials used in roll container production, the standard ensures a consistent quality level across different types. The relevance of EN 12674-2:2001 is underscored by its applicability to dollys as defined in EN 12674-1, reinforcing its importance in creating a cohesive understanding of related products. However, it is essential to note that the standard does not extend to specialized applications involving forklift and reach trucks with purpose-built roll containers, which may necessitate additional regulations or standards to address those specific use cases. Overall, EN 12674-2:2001 serves as a foundational document for the design and safety of roll containers, promoting industry best practices while ensuring that all styles comply with established safety norms. Its comprehensive scope and focus on safety make it a vital resource for manufacturers and users alike, fostering innovation while maintaining a high standard of safety in the logistics and warehousing sectors.
