Overview
EN ISO 9016:2022 (ISO 9016:2022) defines how to describe test specimen location, notch orientation, and examination/reporting for Charpy-type impact tests on welded butt joints in metallic materials. It is applicable to materials in all product forms and to fusion and pressure welding processes. EN ISO 9016:2022 is intended to be used in addition to the ISO 148 series (Charpy pendulum tests) and supersedes the 2012 edition.
Key topics
- Scope and principle
- Specifies how to define specimen location and notch orientation for impact testing of welded joints.
- Impact testing itself shall follow ISO 148-1 (Charpy pendulum impact test - test method).
- Denomination (lettering and numbering system)
- A compact code describes type, location and orientation of the notch plus distances:
- 1st character: U (Charpy U-notch) or V (Charpy V-notch)
- 2nd character: W (notch in weld metal) or H (notch in heat affected zone - HAZ; reference line = fusion/joint line)
- 3rd character: S (notched face parallel to surface - “surface notch”) or T (notch through thickness)
- 4th character (a): distance (mm) of notch centre from reference line (a = 0 if in weld centre)
- 5th character (b): distance (mm) from weld joint face side to nearer face of specimen (b = 0 if on face)
- Tables and figures demonstrate common denominations and typical placements.
- A compact code describes type, location and orientation of the notch plus distances:
- Specimen orientation
- Test specimens shall be taken so longitudinal axes are at right angles to weld length.
- Notch position can be confirmed by macroetching if required.
- Examination and reporting
- Tests performed per ISO 148-1; additional required report items include:
- Reference to ISO 9016:2022
- Test specimen denomination code
- Type and dimensions of any observed imperfections
- Sketch when necessary
- Any other application-standard or contractual information
- Annex A provides an example test report format.
- Tests performed per ISO 148-1; additional required report items include:
Applications
- Standardizes how to document Charpy impact tests of welded joints, improving comparability of results across labs, manufacturers and inspectors.
- Useful when assessing weld toughness, qualification of welding procedures, and failure analysis of welded structures in industries such as pressure vessels, pipelines, shipbuilding, automotive and structural steels.
Who uses this standard
- Welding engineers and metallurgists
- Materials testing laboratories and third‑party inspection bodies
- Quality assurance and compliance personnel in manufacturing and construction
- Standards committees and technical buyers specifying weld testing criteria
