Protective clothing - Gloves with protective effect for association football goal keepers

This European Standard applies to gloves for goal keepers for association football (in the following text just "gloves for goal keepers") with stabilizing and/or stiffening elements (e.g. splint, brace), which due to their construction, provide a protective effect against injuries of the hand or parts of it, such as tored capsules, broken fingers, sprained fingers and wrists.

Overview

EN 16027:2011 is a CEN European Standard for protective clothing - gloves with protective effect for association football goal keepers. It specifies safety, ergonomic and mechanical requirements, and test methods for goalkeeper gloves that include stabilizing or stiffening elements (e.g., splints, braces). The standard targets gloves designed to reduce hand injuries such as torn capsules, fractured or sprained fingers and wrists while allowing normal play.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Applies to goalkeeper gloves with additional stiffening/stabilizing elements that restrict finger flexion to reduce injury risk.
  • Safety and innocuousness: Materials should not release hazardous substances in normal use; manufacturers should list main component substances.
  • Ergonomics: Gloves must allow typical goalkeeper movements (catching, fisting) without undue restriction or discomfort; closure systems must ensure correct fit and no constriction at the wrist/hand junction.
  • Stiffness: Stabilizing elements must support fingers against reverse flexion under load. Stiffness is tested using a pivot-lever apparatus and extension springs (EN 13906-2 specifications). Measured force at 30° must fall within limits (examples in the standard: for sizes <7 min 15 N / max 40 N; for sizes ≥7 min 25 N / max 60 N).
  • Restraint system: Gloves must remain in position during typical movements and impacts. Maximum allowable displacement under test is < 20 mm.
  • Impact strength: Stabilizing/stiffening elements shall not break or splinter under mechanical impact.
  • Sizing and marking: Sizes must be available across intended user hand sizes and defined per EN 420:2003+A1:2009; manufacturers must supply usage and material information.
  • Sampling & conditioning: Test samples - two pairs per size - conditioned at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5) % RH for at least 24 hours.

Applications and practical value

  • Guides design and manufacture of goalkeeper gloves with protective elements to balance protection and playability.
  • Used by product developers and engineers to define required stiffness, restraint and impact performance.
  • Serves test laboratories for reproducible mechanical and ergonomic testing.
  • Helps procurement teams, clubs and retailers assess compliance and safety claims for protective goalkeeper gloves.
  • Useful for certification and conformity assessment under EU directives (see Annex ZA in the standard).

Who should use this standard

  • Sports glove manufacturers and designers
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Quality assurance and compliance teams
  • Sports clubs, federations and safety officers
  • Retailers and procurement specialists sourcing protective goalkeeper equipment
