Overview
EN ISO 22718:2015/A1:2022 is Amendment 1 to the international standard for Cosmetics - Microbiology - Detection of Staphylococcus aureus. Approved by CEN on 10 September 2022 and prepared by ISO/TC 217 in collaboration with CEN/TC 392, this amendment is endorsed without modification and is intended for national adoption by March 2023. The document updates enrichment media options used during microbiological testing of cosmetic products to support detection of Staphylococcus aureus.
Key Topics
- Addition of Modified Eugon LT broth: The amendment explicitly allows Modified Eugon LT broth as an alternative enrichment medium to Eugon LT 100 liquid broth.
- Composition: The amendment provides the composition of Modified Eugon LT broth as follows:
- Pancreatic digest of casein: 15 g
- Papaic digest of soybean meal: 5 g
- Sodium chloride: 4 g
- L-cystine: 0.7 g
- Sodium sulphite: 0.2 g
- Glucose: 5.5 g
- Egg lecithin: 1 g
- Polysorbate 80: 15 g
- Sodium lauryl ether sulfate: 1.56 g
- Water: 1000 ml
- Preparation and sterilization: Instructions specify dissolving polysorbate 80 and egg lecithin into boiling water first, then dissolving remaining components while heating; dispense into containers and sterilize at 121 °C for 15 minutes. Mix while still hot to redissolve settled substances. Final pH after sterilization should be 7.0 ± 0.2 at room temperature.
- Document structure change: The former subclause for other enrichment broths is renumbered (former 5.3.3.2 to 5.3.3.3) to accommodate the new subclause for Modified Eugon LT.
Applications
This amendment is directly relevant to laboratories, manufacturers and quality control professionals involved in cosmetic microbiology testing. Practical applications include:
- Implementing the Modified Eugon LT broth as an alternative enrichment medium in S. aureus detection workflows.
- Preparing validated culture media in-house according to the specified composition and sterilization parameters.
- Ensuring compliance with updated European adoption and national standardization requirements for cosmetics microbiology testing.
Benefits:
- Provides a documented, standardized alternative enrichment formulation for S. aureus detection.
- Facilitates consistent media preparation and reproducible test conditions across laboratories.
