Overview

EN 10027-1:2016 - Designation systems for steels - Part 1: Steel names (CEN) defines a European system for assigning symbolic steel names using letters and numbers to express application and principal characteristics (mechanical, physical, chemical). The standard ensures a unique, abbreviated identification for steels used in EN product standards, Technical Specifications (TS), Technical Reports (TR) and CEN member national standards, and may also be applied to non‑standardized steels.

Key topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Specify rules for designating steels by symbolic letters/numbers to convey application and principal properties.
  • Unique steel name: Each steel shall have one unique steel name to avoid ambiguity.
  • Two designation categories:
    • Category 1 - steels designated by application and mechanical/physical properties (e.g., structural, pressure, line pipe, engineering).
    • Category 2 - steels designated by chemical composition (elemental symbols and amounts).
  • Name structure:
    • Principal symbols (see 7.1) identify main class (e.g., S = structural, P = pressure, L = line pipe, E = engineering).
    • Additional symbols (7.2) are split into Group 1 and Group 2; Group 2 symbols follow Group 1 when needed. Examples include impact requirements, heat treatment codes, or chemical element symbols.
    • Product-related symbols (Tables 16–18) indicate coating, treatment or special requirements and are separated from preceding symbols by a plus sign (+).
  • Special prefixes: G = steel casting; PM = produced by powder metallurgy.
  • Allocation & governance: ECISS/TC100 assigns names for steels in EN/TS/TR; national standards bodies allocate names for national standards. The European Registration Office coordinates steel names with EN 10027-2 (numerical system).
  • Contractual use: Full product designation must include the steel name plus the technical delivery requirement (reference to relevant product standard).

Applications

EN 10027-1 is used for:

  • Standardizing steel identification across the supply chain (manufacturers, mills, fabricators).
  • Engineering and procurement documents to unambiguously specify steel grades (examples in the standard: S235JR, S355J2, P355NH, L360).
  • Product standards and certification, QA traceability, and material databases.
  • Compatibility checks between product standards, national regulations and international trade.

Who should use it

  • Standards bodies and technical committees (CEN/TCs)
  • Steel producers and mills
  • Product standard authors and test houses
  • Design, structural, pressure vessel and pipeline engineers
