Overview

EN 4570:2020 is a European standard established by CEN that specifies the technical requirements for the aerospace-grade heat resisting alloy X12CrNiCoMoW21-20. This alloy is solution treated and supplied as forgings with a maximum effective diameter (De) of 100 mm. It is predominantly used in high-temperature aerospace applications where durability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength are critical.

The standard, designated under ASD-STAN as FE-PA4901, ensures uniformity in quality and performance for aerospace manufacturers and suppliers across Europe. It supports the aerospace industry's demand for reliable, heat-resistant ferrous alloys suitable for structural and engine components.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition: EN 4570:2020 defines precise chemical composition limits for the alloy elements including Carbon (0.08-0.16%), Chromium (18.5-21%), Nickel (19-21%), Molybdenum, Cobalt, Tungsten, and others, to maintain the alloy's heat resistance and mechanical properties.

  • Manufacturing Process: The alloy must be air or vacuum melted and forged from stock compliant with EN 4263 standards. The forgings are solution treated between 1100°C and 1180°C for 1 hour followed by water quenching (WQ), ensuring optimal mechanical properties.

  • Dimensions: Applicable only to forgings with an effective diameter (De) of up to 100 mm to maintain material integrity and performance in aerospace components.

  • Mechanical Properties: Minimum proof stress is 305 MPa, with tensile strength between 690 and 880 MPa. Elongation must exceed 35% to guarantee sufficient ductility. Hardness is limited to HB 229 max, ensuring toughness and workability.

  • Testing & Inspection: Conformance includes macrographic testing, visual inspection, dimensional checks, and marking per EN 4700-006 specifications. Qualification programs should be mutually agreed upon by manufacturers and purchasers.

  • Delivery Conditions: The material is delivered in the solution-treated condition ("U" code), ready for aerospace component fabrication.

Applications

EN 4570:2020's heat resisting alloy X12CrNiCoMoW21-20 is integral to aerospace engineering, particularly for components expected to endure elevated temperatures, thermal cycling, and mechanical stress without degradation. Common applications include:

  • Turbine engine parts requiring long-term oxidation and corrosion resistance.
  • High-strength forgings for structural aerospace components where heat resistance and mechanical durability are critical.
  • Airframe elements exposed to elevated temperatures during operation.
  • Hot section components in jet engines, such as blades or discs, demanding dimensional stability and strength.

By adhering to EN 4570:2020, aerospace manufacturers ensure materials meet strict European aerospace industry standards, enhancing safety, performance, and reliability.

Related Standards

EN 4570:2020 is part of a comprehensive series of aerospace metallic material standards. Key related documents include:

  • EN 4263: Specifies requirements for aerospace heat resisting alloy FE-PA4901 forgings as forged (stock material up to 200 mm diameter).
  • EN 4700-006: Provides technical specifications for pre-production and production aerospace forgings, covering testing, inspection, and dimensional control associated with materials like those in EN 4570.
  • EN 4258: Describes the general organization of aerospace metallic materials standardization, linking various material standards including EN 4570.
  • EN 4500-003: Details specific drafting rules for heat resisting alloy standards in aerospace applications.

Following these interconnected standards ensures manufacturers maintain a full lifecycle quality control for heat resisting alloys used in aerospace, fostering consistency and regulatory compliance across the European aerospace sector.
