Overview
EN ISO 13341:2025 - "Gas cylinders - Fitting of valves to gas cylinders" specifies safe, repeatable procedures for connecting valves to gas cylinders using ISO screw threads. It applies to valve/cylinder combinations conforming to ISO 11363-1 (taper threads) and ISO 15245-1 (parallel threads) and covers inspection, preparation and assembly practices for steel, aluminium alloy and certain composite cylinders. Annex A provides normative torque guidance for cylinders including composite types with steel or aluminium alloy neck bosses.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Procedures target ISO screw-thread valve-to-cylinder connections; recommendations can be applied to non-ISO threads when compatible guidance exists (see ISO/TR 11364).
- Inspection & preparation: Visual inspection of valve and cylinder threads, O‑ring sealing surfaces and cleaning of threads prior to valving (new requirement in this edition).
- Taper-thread valving: Guidance on threading, use of sealants (e.g., tape or paste), soft metal cones or PTFE cones, and controlled torquing.
- Parallel-thread valving: Specific procedures for achieving leak-tight assemblies and correct sealing practice for parallel connections.
- Valve torquing & verification: Torque ranges and limits (given in Annex A) must be observed; exceeding maximum torque can overstress valve inlets or cylinder necks. Tools must fit valves, protect surfaces, and be periodically checked for accuracy.
- Alignment & mechanical constraints: Axis alignment of valve and cylinder; procedures for cylinders with fixed shrouds or welded bosses to achieve proper valve orientation.
- Material-specific precautions: Lower torques and thermal considerations for aluminium alloy and composite cylinders; avoid valving at elevated temperatures that could induce residual stresses.
- Manufacturer instructions: Valve and cylinder manufacturers’ specific recommendations take precedence when they differ from this standard.
Applications and users
EN ISO 13341:2025 is essential for:
- Cylinder manufacturers and assemblers
- Valve manufacturers and suppliers
- Gas filling and distribution companies
- Cylinder inspection/repair workshops and conformity assessors
- Safety engineers, maintenance technicians and regulators
Use cases include final assembly at production, field re-valving, service/repair operations, and quality-assurance procedures at gas filling plants.

4 General requirements and recommendations
Gas cylinders and valves shall be connected so that when in use the combination is gas tight and the valve
cannot be removed inadvertently from the cylinder.
Standards exist to allow for the assessment of the condition of both cylinders and valves, e.g. ISO 22434 and
ISO 18119. Their requirements should be taken into account before assembly, especially to verify that the
threads are in an acceptable condition.
The tools used to screw the valve into the gas cylinder shall fit the valve properly and the gas cylinder shall
be secured against rotation during the torquing process.
The tools shall not cause damage to either the valve or the cylinder. Additional instructions given by the
cylinder manufacturer shall be followed.
In particular for composite cylinders, which are less able to withstand the stresses typically applied to
metallic cylinder
